Conor Benn believes he is set for “global superstardom” after committing his future to Zuffa Boxing.
The 29-year-old Brit shocked the boxing world by leaving Matchroom to sign a one-fight deal with the emerging promotional company in February. That outing took place on April 11, when Benn widely outpointed two-time junior welterweight champion Regis Prograis over 10 rounds at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. Zuffa Boxing announced Friday that Benn put pen to paper on a five-fight contract that extends through 2028.
Benn explained why during the newest episode of “Inside The Ring,” which premiered Monday on DAZN.
“When you look at what they’re doing for boxing,” Benn said, “and the history of UFC, the history of WWE, they’ve got incredible backing behind them and they know what they’re doing in combat sport. You see my whole team – Zuffa, my close team who helped me get me to where I am, what I can promise and guarantee to them is that I will give 100 percent and I expect the same in return. Zuffa do that. They’ve gone above and beyond in the short time that I’ve been with them, and I believe they will take me to global superstardom.”
Benn’s fight with Prograis took place at a 150-pound catch weight. He hasn’t weighed 147 pounds or less since April 2022, but Benn insisted that he will be able to make the welterweight limit for his next fight.
The Essex, England resident is currently the No. 1 contender for Ryan Garcia’s WBC welterweight title and the pair are both said to be keen to fight each other next. But Benn (25-1, 14 KOs) says his newfound fame across the pond has given him options beyond Garcia (25-2, 20 KOs, 1 NC) should that fight fall through.
“Listen, it’s a blessing to be in the position that I’m in,” Benn said, “because right now, I’m the most wanted man in America. So, anyone can get it if Ryan Garcia doesn’t accept the fight. I know he’s been very vocal, but there’s a lot of fighters who do a lot of talking and not a lot of pen to paper.
“So, we’re trying to get that fight made. If it doesn’t get made, then all the rest of the Americans who are world champions can get it. I just want to push on to be the best fighter I can be, be the best athlete I can be and give people, the fans, the support, the fights that they want.”
Devin Haney (WBO) and Rolando “Rolly” Romero (WBA) are the other American welterweight champions. Haney (33-0, 15 KOs, 1 NC) is ranked No. 1 by The Ring, whereas Garcia is fourth and Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) is fifth among the top 10 contenders for an unclaimed championship.
Despite winning 98-92 on all three cards, Benn struggled to hurt 37-year-old Prograis (30-4, 24 KOs), who admitted he was injured heading into the fight.
However, a clash with Garcia for a 147-pound belt would mean Benn would be back in eight-ounce gloves. Boxers wear 10-ounce gloves in fights contracted above the welterweight limit.
“That’s a massive difference,” Benn said. “Going from 10-ounce to eight-ounce. Those eight-ounce gloves are deadly. How badly do I want to knock him out? Listen, if I see an opportunity, I’m going to take it and there’s no doubt I’ll be up for the fight. I’m extremely hungry for that fight and I've been calling for that fight for a while.”
