NEW YORK — Lani Daniels pulled off a major upset of Shadasia Green on Friday night, scoring a ninth-round stoppage to become unified super middleweight champion.
But before she could fully celebrate her accomplishment, she turned her attention to her fallen opponent.
“I hope she’s alright,” Daniels said during her post-fight interview. “I’m happy but also concerned for her. I’m happy for this and I’m happy to become a world champion once again.”
The pace caught up to Green, who had nothing left entering the ninth. A visibly winded Green labored out of her corner, but Daniels, smelling blood in the water, went for the finish. She landed countless hard shots against the ropes until the referee stepped in to call a halt.
The fight at Infosys Arena in New York’s Madison Square Garden started in Green's favor. She came out stalking, making contact first and landing a strong jab to catch Daniels' attention.
Green continued with the pressure with plenty of success, but it was Daniels who punctuated the round with a strong right-left combination.
In the second with Green pushing the pace, Daniels was unable to keep the unified champ off her as they traded hard shots.
By the time the fourth and fifth rounds came, the tide began to turn as Green (16-2, 11 KOs) found herself against the ropes. Her attempt to muck up things was actually what Daniels needed.
Daniels (12-4-2, 2 KOs) kept it going. She seemed to fluster Green for long stretches, and by the seventh the New Jersey native got exactly what she needed as she hurt the former heavyweight and light heavyweight champion.
Then the emphatic end came.
Although Daniels was excited to begin her new reign as a unified super middleweight champion, there was ample concern for Green. The former champion slumped onto a stool while her hands were being unwrapped as she received medical attention. The 36-year-old was rushed out of the ring on a stretcher to a local hospital.
Shortly after being medically examined, The Ring was told that Green is breathing, aware, alert and doing well.
