Derrick Osaze 'feeling darker' before Jimmy Sains clash

Derrick Osaze knows the score, much like he did last January when coming to a Matchroom show as the away fighter.
The stakes are technically lower here against Liddard's gymmate but also heightened for a 32-year-old more known for his recent defeats than a one-night, trio of victories aimed to set him up for bigger and better things.
Osaze (13-3, 3 KOs) has previously gone the 10-round distance with, and fallen short against both main event combatants in George Liddard (13-0, 8 KOs) and Tyler Denny (21-3-3, 1 KO) 3½ years apart.
Yet here the Barrington Brown-trained visitor will look to spoil Jimmy Sains' pristine 11-0 record, aware his name will have circulated around the Sims gym in preparation for another talent's step-up opportunity at middleweight.
It showed in the way he's approached fight week activities, not keen on hanging about or taking in the atmosphere. It's all business and needs to be, if he'll make amends for perhaps overthinking last time around.
"I'm feeling darker for this one. Like I said last time, I'm no-one's stepping stone or gatekeeper, Jimmy is a cool guy but I am not gonna be the 'name in the gym', you boxed him, how did you do... measuring stick. I feel a lot more intent, normally more bubbly but wanted to get in and out, let my hands go. It's going to be an interesting night," Osaze told The Ring after Thursday's final press conference.
A 14-month layoff is far from ideal, especially when you're tasked with facing a hard-hitting youngster itching to close the developmental gap on his contemporaries and use your name as the measuring stick you so dearly avoid.
Osaze's mentality was honest but on reflection, he knows what went wrong against Liddard. Sains would be wise to expect more urgency against a determined veteran on a two-fight losing streak, which presents its own dangers.
"You're facing the home kid and already two or three rounds down. If I knew it was closer than I thought, I would've changed my approach in the last couple. Thought I had to put him on the canvas as I wouldn't get anything on the scorecards, having seen the Bilal Fawaz fight [split draw with Junaid Bostan] before mine. I stay in the gym, am regularly training and sparring. Not active, but I wouldn't have said yes if I wasn't prepared."
Liddard beat Osaze 97-93 on Kieran McCann's card while Lee Every and Mark Bates scored their bout 96-94, with the Billericay puncher parlaying his first main event win into a successful 2025 he finished as a history-maker.
Sains told The Ring to start this year that he would look at an English title defense, before moving onto more challenging opportunities. Southern Area and English champion sounds nice, but the 25-year-old isn't satisfied.
"Me and George are different, but I have watched his fight back and got some tips from George, who I still spar a lot with. I'm expecting a tough test, Derrick has been in there with good operators and only been stopped by [former world title challenger] Denzel Bentley, who caught him with a great shot. Every fight is getting harder, there's no easy ones now, just got to stay switched on and give 100% every time," he told The Ring this week.
If victorious against Osaze, he will likely vacate the belt and move towards British and Commonwealth level where Liddard currently reigns. The proud West Ham fan already has one eye on European honors, with Denny a perfect piece of matchmaking to gauge just how far off the upper echelons at 160 pounds their man really is right now.
Hamzah Sheeraz's two-round dissection of Denny in September 2024 saw him granted a voluntary shot at WBC beltholder Carlos Adames (24-1-1, 18 KOs) five months later. Unsuccessful financial negotiations and weight-cutting issues mean Adames hasn't boxed since their contentious split draw last February, but he will defend against Austin 'Ammo' Williams on Matchroom's second show of the day in Orlando, Florida from 8pm ET on Saturday. The 160-pound division is in need of a shakeup and there's still no bonafide top dog in the weight class.
Matchroom also promote Newham middleweight Emmanuel 'Leli' Buttigieg (11-0, 3 KOs), who just turned 21 and has an English title final eliminator against Jake Goodwin (8-2-1, 1 KO) elsewhere on the Liddard-Denny undercard. The machine will continue churning, win or lose, but Sains knows the importance of another highlight reel display here.
