Devin Haney and Rolando Romero are working toward getting a deal done for a welterweight title unification fight on May 30 at the Barclays Center in New York.
Haney joined “Inside The Ring” on Monday to share an update on the fight.
“I can’t say that it’s a done deal yet,” said Haney. “We are working on it. I think that it’s very likely that it will happen. I think it’s a good fight for boxing and a chance for me to pick up another belt and beat the guy who beat Ryan Garcia. I'll move up higher in the pound-for-pound list and show how great I really am.”
Haney (33-0, 18 KOs, 1 NC) is the WBO welterweight champion, ranked No. 1 by The Ring in the division and is The Ring’s No. 9 pound-for-pound fighter. Haney, a three-division champion, knocked down and bested Brian Norman Jr. by unanimous decision in November for the title he currently holds.
Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) is the WBA titleholder and is rated No. 5 by The Ring at 147 pounds. Romero scored a massive upset win against Garcia in May, in which he dropped Garcia en route to a unanimous decision win. Romero's victory has aged well, as Garcia rebounded to beat Mario Barrios for the WBC title last month.
“Rolly has a very awkward style, and that's what makes it hard for guys to beat him,” said Haney. “Ryan had a lot of trouble with him just because he didn't know how to adjust to his awkwardness.
“This is a fight where I go in there, have fun, and show how good I really am. With a guy like Rolly, I'll be able to showcase a lot more of my arsenal, bring a lot more tools, and really open up on him.”
