Davison has come under intense scrutiny since Saturday night, when Itauma punched himself out in his challenge for the vacant IBF heavyweight title, allowing Filip Hrgovic to force a stunning ninth-round stoppage.

Hrgovic, Croatia’s first world heavyweight champion, was well behind on all three cards at the time of the stoppage and Davison has been accused of fight mismanagement.

Having missed out on the title Saturday night, Davison has the chance to steer another of his heavyweights to world honors on October 17 when former WBO king Wardley faces Daniel Dubois in an immediate rematch.

Wardley, The Ring’s No. 5-rated heavyweight, says he will be driven to victory and a second stint in charge of that belt by the desire to protect his gym’s reputation.

“I do feel like it's my turn,” said Wardley, who came face-to-face with Dubois at a press conference Wednesday to officially launch the promotion for their 02 Arena rematch.

“It's my turn to do my bit for the gym. It's my turn to prove it because I've been overwhelmed by the amount of criticism Ben has received.

“I’m just almost in shock because I don't know another trainer in British boxing that gets so much stick after a loss. I find it bemusing, like it's delusional to me.

“If anything, that's added a bit of fuel to me to be like, 'all right, fine, no worries, I'll show you what us, the team, Ben Davison, what we can all do’.

“I'll prove it to you, take that on my shoulders. I'll wear that, no problem.”

On 21-year-old stable mate Itauma, who crashed to the first defeat of his career, Wardley added: “I think we're all very clear on the fact he will come back around again, a fight or two, and I think at the age of 21, he can still have a very long reign of being a world heavyweight champion.”

For now however, Wardley (20-1-1, 19 KOs) is more worried about securing the second world championship reign of his own career. The Ipswich puncher beat Joseph Parker for the interim title in October and was then upgraded to full champion when Oleksandr Usyk vacated the belt.

The first defense of his belt had been going well, too, with Dubois dropped twice in the opening three rounds at Manchester’s Co-op Live Arena on May 9. However, like Hrgovic did at the weekend, Dubois turned the fight on its head and forced a late stoppage.

Referee Howard Foster eventually waved it off with 28 seconds gone in round 11, with Wardley under heavy fire from Dubois and much of the post-fight discourse suggested that it should have been stopped sooner.

Again Davison, along with Wardley’s co-trainer trainer Robert Hodgins, received criticism for not pulling their fighter out sooner.

But, when asked what he thought of his corner’s work in the fight, Wardley said: “It was perfectly handled by the corner…the corner were perfectly fine.

“Again, I'll repeat over and over again, the people in my corner aren't new. I'm not flicking from coach to coach to people who don't know me. I've had Robert Hodgins, who's been my coach since I started. And I mean that from since I first ever put on a pair of gloves. I trust that man with my life.

"Same with Ben Davison... he's been with me for five, six, maybe coming up to seven years. I trust that man as well. So, these aren't new people. These aren't fresh inexperienced people or those who don't know me. They've seen me have hard spars, seen me through hard fights, moments and hard occasions.

“They know my durability, what I can go through and how I can come out on the other side. Take Justis Huni for example. A fight of 10 rounds that wasn't really going my way, but I pulled out a win.

“So, they know I've always got that power, control and that willpower to win.”

Wardley was so confident of exacting revenge on Dubois that he decided to trigger the immediate rematch clause before he had even taken his fight shorts off in Manchester.

“I hold my hands up and will say I was the victim of my own success,” said Wardley of the two early knockdowns.

“I got trigger happy with the big right hand, was too laid back, relaxed and comfortable. I had zero excuses and it's the same now. I triggered the rematch as soon as I could, we just needed a date and venue. I have proved time and time again that I can change, adapt and improve and will do that again.”
