Emiliano Vargas has plenty of time remaining in his career, but he doesn't want to be babied.
Most 21-year-old fighters are slowly making their way up the ladder. Not Vargas. He's fresh off his second 10-round contest, a ninth-round knockout of Agustin Quintana last month, and he believes a world title shot is around the corner.
“Definitely this year, no doubt,” Vargas told a group of reporters when asked when he expects to fight for a championship belt. “I know my journey is different from everybody else’s. I’m just grateful for the opportunity. The sky’s the limit.”
Vargas’ ambition isn't far-fetched, at least according to the sanctioning bodies. The 140-pounder is ranked No. 5 by the WBO, No. 11 by the IBF, and No. 12 by the WBA.
At the same time, even he acknowledges that he could use a bit more time in the ring before he takes the ultimate step. He has yet to face an opponent capable of pushing him, let alone an actual contender.
“I think definitely the rounds,” said Vargas, who has only 60 professional rounds under his belt. “One step at a time and one fight at a time. I just want to be great. Big announcement coming soon, for sure.”
