Ennis guarantees he will KO Zayas: 'Bit off way more than he can chew'

BROOKLYN – Jaron Ennis couldn’t stop himself from smiling as he stared directly at Xander Zayas for the first time.
Ennis (35-0, 31 KOs, 1 NC) and unified 154-pound champion Zayas (23-0, 13 KOs) made each other's acquaintance at a press conference Wednesday at Barclays Center to promote their fight on June 27 at the same venue.
"Boots" knows that Zayas is a special talent. And the 23-year-old champion from Puerto Rico has some important victories, including decisions over Jorge Garcia and Abass Baraou in his last two fights to collect his world titles. Ennis has had difficulty getting big fights.
However, that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Ennis believes that Zayas, the Ring's No. 3-ranked junior middleweight, will be in over his head on fight night.
“He’s a great fighter, but there’s levels,” Ennis said during the presser. “I’m not those guys he fought. He bit off way more than he can chew. I’m a show people that I’m the best in the world. I’m stronger than you think, faster than you think. He’s in for a long night. I’m taking those belts. I’m the best at 154.”
Indeed, Ennis, a former 147-pound champion fighting at 154 for the second time, feels Zayas and his team can devise no game plan to beat him.
“It don’t matter what he do, he can run, he can jive, he’s going out,” Ennis continued. “I’m not gonna miss. I just want you to be ready, and I don’t think he’s going to be ready for what’s about to happen.”
