All signs had been pointing toward Xander Zayas and Jaron "Boots" Ennis facing each other next.
Now, it’s official. Matchroom Boxing announced Monday that Zayas will defend his WBA and WBO 154-pound titles against Ennis on June 27 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, live on DAZN.
On Saturday, Zayas and Ennis both posted on social media that they had agreed to their next fights and exchanged a brief back-and-forth.
Zayas (23-0, 13 KOs) has quickly ascended the ladder at 154 pounds, nabbing the WBA and WBO titles in his last two fights. The 23-year-old from San Juan, Puerto Rico, won the vacant WBO title with a unanimous decision over Jorge Garcia Perez last July, then added the WBA belt to his collection in his last fight with a split decision victory over Abass Baraou, who held the WBA title on January 31.
Zayas is currently boxing's youngest unified champion.
Ennis (35-0, 31 KOs), 28, is a former unified Ring, IBF and WBA champion at welterweight. The hard-hitting Philadelphia native has fought once at 154 pounds and won by first-round knockout against Uisma Lima on October 11.
Plans were originally for Ennis to face Vergil Ortiz, The Ring’s No. 1-ranked junior middleweight, on April 18, but Ortiz’s promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, obtained a temporary restraining order to halt the bout from happening without their involvement. An arbitrator must rule by September 2 on whether Ortiz will remain under contract with Golden Boy or become a promotional free agent before his deal expires in August 2027.
Zayas is The Ring’s No. 3-ranked junior middleweight, while Ennis is No. 5.
