With more deep-pocketed competition than ever in the promotional marketplace, Matchroom Boxing has signed perhaps its most talented fighter to a seven-bout contract extension.
The British company announced Tuesday that unified junior middleweight champ Jaron “Boots” Ennis has re-signed with the promoter that has handled his past five fights. Philadelphia’s Ennis (36-0, 32 KOs, 1 NC), who owns the WBA and WBO 154-pound championships, is The Ring’s No. 1 contender for a vacant title in that division and No. 9 on our pound-for-pound list.
“I’m excited for my extended partnership with Matchroom,” Ennis said in a statement. “Together we have aligned ourselves in all the right positions to get what I want, and that’s undisputed!
“The world is about to see why I’m different and why I’m the best fighter in the world! These guys aren’t on my level! They can’t do what I do! Road to undisputed! Road to the number one pound-for-pound best fighter in the world!”
Ennis, 29, and IBF champ Josh Kelly (19-1-1, 9 KOs) have agreed to meet next in a title unification fight. The date and site of that bout have not been determined.
The winner is expected to pursue undisputed status by facing WBC champ Sebastian Fundora in his following fight. Fundora (25-1-1, 17 KOs) stopped mandatory challenger Ermal Hadribeaj (23-1-1, 8 KOs) with one second to go in the 12th round of their fight Saturday night at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.
Fundora is ranked No. 3 by The Ring, behind only Ennis and WBC interim champ Vergil Ortiz Jr. (24-0, 22 KOs), who is expected to move up to the middleweight division for his next bout. Kelly is ranked No. 6.
Ennis, a former Ring, IBF and WBA welterweight champ, initially signed with Matchroom in April 2024. He most recently stopped previously unbeaten WBA/WBO junior middleweight champ Xander Zayas (23-1, 13 KOs) in the seventh round June 27 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Matchroom has an exclusive content deal with DAZN, which will continue to stream Ennis’ fights on that streaming service.
“I am delighted that Jaron has signed a new deal with us,” Eddie Hearn, Matchroom’s chairman, said. “It’s an honor that this pound-for-pound star continues to trust us with his career, and the whole team intends to repay that faith by delivering what he wants; unification and undisputed fights and the biggest names and nights in the sport.”
