The British boxing roadshow has bounced from city to city over the first third of 2026.
This weekend provides a brief cessation in hostilities but there are still plenty of stories to be told.
One of the world’s top middleweights talked to The Ring about his biggest supporter, a promising heavyweight spoke about improving under a true specialist and a middleweight hope described how his determination to improve helped him despite injury setbacks.
MUM’S THE WORD FOR BENTLEY
Denzel Bentley is still reveling in his exciting seventh round knockout win over hard punching Venezuelan, Endry Saavedra. The win earned him the WBO interim middleweight title.
Ranked at No. 9 by The Ring, Bentley is one of the most popular fighters on the British boxing circuit and his victory over Saavedra was extremely well received.
Bentley (22-3-1, 18 KOs) admits that he does find himself flicking through internet comments to find out what people are saying about him but the 31-year-old from Battersea doesn’t search his own name on X or instagram.
Bentley’s mum has become a boxing fan. She watches a lot of pre-fight prediction videos and YouTube clips and forwards them straight over. Sometimes, she even adds her own tactical input.
“She's my biggest fan but she'll let me know,” Bentley told The Ring.
“There's been times before she's like, 'Denzel, you need to work on your speed, man. You've got to be fast. Look at these fighters. They're all fast' or 'Sometimes you just throw that one shot. You need to be fast and throw combinations' and I'm just laughing.
“You know what? She's watching. She's paying attention. What she's saying isn't a lie.
“It's just that because it's coming from her, I'm like, 'Mum, do you know what you're talking about?' She wasn’t lying to be honest."
HARRIS LEARNING UNDER FURY
Peter Fury is currently preparing kickboxing legend, Rico Verhoeven, for his May 23 WBC heavyweight title fight with The Ring and unified heavyweight champion, Oleksandr Usyk, but the Cheshire-based trainer has another interesting big man in his stable.
Three weeks ago, Matty Harris (10-1, 7 KOs) scored an impressive second-round knockout of Franklin Ignatius on the undercard of Deontay Wilder’s win over Derek Chisora.
Fury played a crucial role in helping his nephew, two-time heavyweight champion, Tyson, create his unique, relaxed style and masterminded his outstanding 2015 decision victory over Wladimir Klitschko.
The win earned Fury the Ring, WBO, WBA and IBF titles and heralded in a new era for the heavyweight division.
Harris, 26, joined up with Fury in late 2023 after suffering a shock stoppage loss and the pair have racked up five wins.
The 6-foot-8 Harris had previously been used as a sparring partner for Fury’s son, Hughie, but has grown to appreciate Fury’s methods since working with him day in, day out.
“I think he's a great boxing trainer generally but he specializes in heavyweights, 100 per cent. I think him being a big man himself, he knows what it's like. He knows how to train. He knows when to pull back, he knows how big men should fight,” Harris told The Ring.
“But, again, he had Savannah Marshall, who was a world champion as a middleweight. He has coached a couple of other fighters over the years that have gone on to do well.
“His attention to detail, his discipline and everything else around that. I can't give that man enough credit, honestly. He's one of a kind. I've been in boxing gyms and I've been around a lot of different trainers and whatnot. He is the best I've ever come across, 100%.”
SMITH WORKS THROUGH HIS ISSUES
Unbeaten middleweight, Clark Smith (10-0, 1 KO), makes his latest appearance on Saturday night.
The 25-year-old southpaw has been hampered by injury during his short career but rather than drifting away from the gym, enjoying a few more late nights and allowing some crucial learning time to slip through his hands, Smith made it his mission to get back into training at the Champs Camp gym in Manchester as quickly as possible and do what his body would allow him to.
That dedication has proven to Clarke and his trainer, Joe Gallagher, just how much he wants to be a professional and has helped him to continue improving.
“When I was an amateur. I’d be thinking, 'Why is it always me?' but at the end of the day it's just one of them things. It can't stop you learning. Listen, if you've got a bad hand, that's why God gives you two,” Smith told The Ring.
“That's why you've got feet. You practice your feet and stuff like that so there's always something you can do. I don't take it to heart as much anymore, I just think it's part of the game.”
