All went according to plan for Charlie Sheehy in his first fight with Matchroom Boxing.
Sheehy thoroughly outboxed Nike Theran en route to a ninth-round stoppage on Saturday at Fertitta Center on the campus of the University of Houston. Sheehy’s dominant victory came in the co-main event of O’Shaquie Foster defending his WBC 130-pound title versus Raymond Ford.
Sheehy (13-0, 8 KOs) was making his promotional debut with Matchroom after signing with the company on April 15.
Sheehy’s advantage in speed was evident from the opening bell, as he routinely was able to land jabs to the body and get out of range before Theran, of Barranquilla, Colombia, could respond. The jab to the body made up most of Sheehy’s offense as he controlled the fight and never found himself in any trouble.
Theran (20-3, 14 KOs), 28, was a late replacement on a week’s notice and fought like someone trying to pace himself for the later rounds. He struggled to get anything going on offense and failed to land anything of substance against the slick Sheehy.
Sheehy, a 27-year-old from San Francisco, was more than content to lean on his speed to land to the body from the outside and make Theran routinely miss. The most notable moment of the fight came in the second half of the eighth round when Sheehy rocked Theran with a straight right hand. Sheehy fought much more aggressively in the duration of the round, landing power shots to the head and body, though, Theran managed to survive.
Sheehy continued the momentum into the ninth, connecting with power shots as Theran was more apt to complain to referee Raul Caiz Jr. about some punches landing on the back of his head. Sheehy stayed on the front foot, and late in the round with Theran’s back to the ropes, he dropped him with a straight right hand and Caiz stopped the fight without a count.
U.S. Olympian Jones coasts to victory
Omari Jones (7-0, 4 KOs) soundly outboxed Diego Osuna (9-1, 6 KOs) for a dominant unanimous decision victory.
Jones, a 2024 Olympic bronze medalist, won 80-71 on all three judges' scorecards
Jones, 23, of Orlando, Florida, got off to a fast start, dropping Osuna, 30, with a leaping left hook in the first round. As the rounds progressed, Jones’ stiff jab and skill advantage allowed him to dominate. In the seventh, Jones rocked Osuna, of Des Moines, Iowa, twice, but the latter managed to hold on and survive.
Jones sought the stoppage victory in the final round and fought more aggressively in spurts. Ultimately, Jones coasted to his third straight decision win where he won every round.
Woodard scores 8th-round TKO
Javon Woodard (17-2, 15 KOs) dropped Flores (29-6-1, 13 KOs) three times to earn the most significant win of his career in the first fight on the DAZN broadcast.
Woodard, of Raleigh, North Carolina, started the fireworks early, dropping the Mexican native with a chopping straight right hand early in the second round. Flores worked his way back into the fight with his volume and body work.
It turned into a battle of attrition with both fighters having their moments in the all-action clash. Woodard, 30, took back control of the fight when he rocked Flores again early in the eighth round with a sharp straight right hand and he eventually took a knee after taking a flurry of punches.
Flores, 33, fought back, but another straight right hand from Woodard marked the beginning of the end. With Flores’ back to the ropes, Woodard unleashed another flurry of punches that sent Flores to the canvas for a third and final time late in the eighth round.
The rest of the undercard:
- 6 rounds, junior lightweight: Zaquin Moses (7-0, 3 KOs) def. Travis Crawford (7-7, 2 KOs) by unanimous decision (60-54, 60-54, 60-54)
- 6 rounds, junior lightweight: Julian Montalvo (7-0, 5 KOs) def. Maximus Moya (3-4, 2 KOs) by fourth-round TKO
