LAS VEGAS — It was high drama late, but when the dust settled on a fight where little separated Frank Martin and Nahir Albright the judges’ scorecard reflected just that.
The three judges, Tim Cheatham, Max DeLuca and John McCarthy, scored it a unanimous draw at 95-95 for the 10-round, 142-pound catchweight bout on the undercard of “The Ring: High Stakes” headlined by Mario Barrios vs. Ryan Garcia WBC welterweight title bout at T-Mobile Arena.
After the fight, both fighters called for a rematch.
“He put up a good fight,” Martin said in the post-fight interview. “He’s a tough opponent. I take my hat off to him. If we can go at it again, I want to go at it again.”
With the fight still up for grabs in the 10th and final round, Albright, 30, connected with a left hook that put Martin on wobbly legs. The Detroit native grabbed onto Albright and tackled him into the ropes, which bought him some extra time.
Albright (17-2-1, 7 KOs), of Philadelphia, stayed on the offensive and landed some big shots with Martin, 31, on the ropes, but he lost his mouthpiece twice to cause stoppages to the action by referee Robert Hoyle.
“If my mouthpiece didn’t keep falling out, y’all know what would have happened,” Albright said. “It was a great fight, and I think we should run it back.”
The fight got off to a slow start with little separating the two. Martin (19-1-1, 13 KOs) had success landing short combinations, while Albright’s straight right hand produced his best work.
The action began to pick up in the fifth and sixth rounds when Martin connected with the short power shots. The tide turned back in Albright’s favor when he got back on the front foot and was able to land his straight right hand at will.
Martin regained control in the ninth round as a result of being the aggressor and fighting well at mid-range, setting the stage for a dramatic final round.
