LAS VEGAS – After nearly 18 months outside of the ring, Frank Martin reintroduced himself to the boxing world emphatically with a devastating fourth-round knockout of Rances Barthelemy in December.
In the blink of an eye, “The Ghost” is right back into the ring. Martin will face Nahir Albright in a 10-round junior welterweight bout on “The Ring: High Stakes” undercard Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena.
“Getting right back in there was perfect for me,” Martin told The Ring. “With the long layoff, I’m getting back in there just to show people that's something that I've been wanting to do. We’re here, I’m busy now, so if I can keep it like this, that’d be perfect.”
Also on the docket is a pair of 140-pound title bouts.
IBF champion Richardson Hitchins (20-0, 8 KOs) makes his second defense against Oscar Duarte (30-2-1, 23 KOs) in the evening's co-main event while WBA titleholder Gary Antuanne Russell (18-1, 17 KOs) ends a year-long layoff when defending against overdue mandatory challenger Andy Hiraoka (24-0, 19 KOs). The card is headlined by WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios (29-2-2, 18 KOs) facing the unpredictable Ryan Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs, 1 NC).
Martin’s return from an eighth-round knockout loss to Gervonta Davis in June 2024 featured a pair of significant changes. He moved up from lightweight to 140 pounds, and fought for the first time with Buddy McGirt as his trainer.
McGirt noted that a point of emphasis for him with the dynamic southpaw from Detroit was getting him to punch more in combinations and realize his potential.
“The kid has unbelievable talent,” McGirt told The Ring. “He doesn't realize how good he is. I think he’ll be a world champion.”
In Albright (17-2, 7 KOs, 1 NC), Martin and McGirt know they’re up against a tough test. In his first fight in almost 20 months, Albright upset previously unbeaten Kelvin Davis by majority decision June 7 in Davis’ hometown.
But with Albright entering the bout seeking a signature win that could cement him as a contender in one of boxing’s best divisions, Martin (19-1, 13 KOs) isn’t ruling out another highlight-reel victory that could set the stage for a significant bout later this year.
“I expect him to come out, put up a good fight, but just believe my style is going to be a little too much for him,” Martin said. “I’m ready to go out there, have fun and be me. I want to show a lot of the boxing fans who haven’t seen exactly how good I am. I feel like Nahir Albright got the perfect style. He’s a tough guy, so beating him is going to show a lot.”
DAZN will distribute “The Ring: High Stakes” to non-subscribers on pay-per-view for $69.99 in the United States and £24.99 in the United Kingdom. The show is included in DAZN’s Ultimate monthly plan for subscribers ($44.99; £24.99).
