LOS ANGELES – Fighting on the “Mexico vs. The World” card is currently one of the most desired slots in boxing.
Champions like Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez and Emanuel Navarrete are just two of the sport’s touted champions who’ve recently expressed interest to provide chief support to the event that is set to be headlined by Canelo Alvarez on September 12.
Sebastian Fundora, the WBC junior middleweight champion, wants to be in the mix as well if he gets past Keith Thurman on March 28.
To make himself an attractive candidate, Fundora, who’s born to Cuban and Mexican parents, wants to face WBC interim titleholder Vergil Ortiz Jr. for the vacant Ring title. Ortiz is rated No. 1 in the division by The Ring, and Fundora is ranked second.
“It would be great to fight on the Canelo card,” Fundora told The Ring. “I'll be ready to fight again in September after the Thurman fight. There are all kinds of big opportunities for me to be in big fights. It can be against whoever, since there are all kinds of names. I'm going to fight these guys. I'm chopping down whoever steps up. I'm building a legacy. I'll fight Vergil. I'm eventually going to get my hands on the Ring title, just like my sister Gabriella.”
The junior middleweight division is the deepest in boxing, featuring champions Xander Zayas (WBA, WBO) and Josh Kelly (IBF), contenders like Jaron Ennis, Errol Spence Jr. and former undisputed champion Jermell Charlo, and former title holders Bakhram Murtazaliev and Israil Madrimov.
Ortiz, meanwhile, is entangled in a lawsuit with promoter Golden Boy but should be inclined to resolve the matter as quickly as possible to continue fighting in the prime of his career.
“The Towering Inferno” Fundora (23-1-1, 15 KOs), meanwhile, a career-long 154-pounder, said he still can boil down his 6-foot, 5 ½ inch frame to ensure a variety of career-defining fights can be made.
“I'm still comfortable at 154 pounds right now, and there are a lot more fights left for me in the division,” said Fundora. “It's the best division in boxing, and I feel like I am on top of the world. I'm going to stay at 154 until we run dry. It's all about working hard and staying humble. I want to take advantage of it since we're here.”
Before Fundora can be considered as a featured attraction for a Canelo card, or a fight against Ortiz and the rest of the field, he needs to get past Thurman (31-1, 23 KOs) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas while headlining a PBC on Prime Video PPV event.
Oddsmakers expect Fundora to win comfortably. Fundora is installed as a -380 betting favorite, while Thurman is a +280 betting underdog, per DraftKings.
“I'm not surprised that I am such a big betting favorite,” said Fundora. “I'm expecting the best Keith Thurman, but this is a new era. I'm beating him down.”
