Gervonta Davis is a ‘plus for sport, really wish he gets it together', says De La Hoya

Oscar De La Hoya hopes Gervonta Davis can defeat his inner demons and return to being a star in boxing.
Gervonta Davis has undermined his career yet again.
Last week, Courtney Rossel, Davis’ ex-girlfriend, filed a civil lawsuit accusing Davis of aggravated battery, false imprisonment, kidnapping, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
The situation led Most Valuable Promotions to cancel the matchup between Davis and Jake Paul, which was set to headline an exhibition on Netflix in Miami. The alleged incident even prompted Paul to call Davis a “walking human piece of garbage.”
Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) is stuck on the sidelines now that his most recent transgression has come to light. The WBA lightweight champion has alluded to retirement over the last year and openly talked about how his passion for boxing has faded while he has dealt with his assortment of personal problems.
Hall of Fame fighter-turned-promoter Oscar De La Hoya – who worked with Davis when “Tank” knocked out Ryan Garcia in 2023 – can’t quite determine what the future holds for the 31-year-old knockout artist from Baltimore.
“He's a great fighter and one of my favorites in the ring. Outside of the ring, for some reason, he gets in trouble,” De La Hoya told reporters. “I'm not sure what he's going through. If he is going through something, I wish him all the best and hope that he gets back on a straight line. This is a tough sport that gets into your psyche and [expletive] with you. …
"I don't really know if he wanted this fight, and an exhibition. I don't know if that's in Tank's nature. Yeah, it would have been a great payday and a lot of exposure, but it would have done nothing for his legacy. ... Who knows if he's ever going to fight again? I wish he does. I want to see him against the very best with the fights the fans want to see. He's a plus for the sport. I really wish he gets it together.”
Davis has fought just five times in the last 3½ years and has been idle since his controversial majority draw against Lamont Roach Jr. in March.
