Willy Hutchinson is rarely short of words, but the Scotsman struggled to describe how he felt after beating Joshua Buatsi to become the WBC light heavyweight champion.
“It's fantastic,” Hutchinson (21-2, 14 KOs) said after impressively outboxing Buatsi at Manchester’s AO Arena.
“I don't know what to say.”
A few minutes earlier and full of adrenaline after finally achieving his childhood dream, Hutchinson, 28, called London’s Anthony Yarde into the ring and got negotiations for his first title defense underway.
“I've got big respect for this man. Let me tell you, he's no walkover. Let's go,” he said. “Him next. Big respect. Honest. I’ve got respect for his coach; they’re proper people. Same as Buatsi.
“I'm as rough and ready as the next person. I come from the woods in Scotland, man. We came from nothing to world champ.”
Now 35 years old, Yarde (27-4, 24 KOs) has made three unsuccessful bids to become a world champion, but after coming up short against the fearsome Sergei Kovalev, Artur Beterbiev and David Benavidez, he immediately expressed interest in taking up a different type of challenge and tracking down the quicksilver Hutchinson.
“It is 100% a fight I want to take,” he said. “Congratulations to Willy; I think he boxed beautifully, making him miss, making him pay. I think it will be an interesting build-up and an interesting fight if we fight.
“I think I'll beat any British fighter. I definitely think I'll beat him but, again, tonight is his night. He's just become a WBC world champion. I didn’t want to get in the ring because I know what it takes to win a world title and I know what it takes to even be on this stage so, congratulations. Tonight is his night. Hopefully, we can negotiate back doors and get the fight happening.”
The future is bright for Hutchinson.
In the build-up to the fight, Hutchinson spoke about writing himself a list of targets in a notebook when he was 13 years old. He has spent the past 15 years ticking of those accomplishments and winning the WBC title completed his mission.
Now, he can set some new goals.
“It's unbelievable, man. It's unbelievable. I’m lost with words. I told you all how good I was. I said it years ago, didn't I? I've done it. I've done it. I've accomplished my book,” he said.
“Whatever comes now, we don't know. It's all [about] the future now for me.”
