The boogeyman of the super middleweight division lived up to the moniker in his first IBF title defense.
Osleys Iglesias dropped Oliver Zaren twice before stopping him in the seventh round to retain his 168-pound title on Thursday at Capitole de Quebec in Quebec City, Canada.
The knockout victory was Iglesias’ 10th in a row.
Iglesias (16-0, 15 KOs), The Ring’s No. 2 super middleweight, controlled throughout and picked apart a courageous Zaren with a stiff right jab and hard power shots. Zaren (19-1-1, 8 KOs) fought back early on and had some moments of his own, but as time passed the Cuban southpaw gradually started to beat him down.
Iglesias, 28, did serious damage in the sixth as the Dane's face was starting to mark up and a cut formed over his left eye. Zaren, 26, also began to move more frantically as Iglesias picked up the pace and landed power shots with more frequency.
Iglesias scored his first knockdown late in the sixth with a chopping left hand that sent Zaren reeling backwards before going to the canvas. Zaren went back down as quickly as he got up from a combination of shots.
The bell likely saved Zaren from being stopped. After the ringside doctor took a long look at him before allowing the fight to continue, Zaren got battered more in the seventh until his corner threw in the towel with 1:29 left.
After the win, Iglesias said he has his eyes on the winner of Canelo Alvarez versus WBC super middleweight titlist Christian Mbilli on October 31 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Alvarez-Mbilli, which headlines Mexico versus the World, will stream on DAZN PPV and as part of the DAZN Ultimate Plan.
Iglesias won the vacant IBF belt earlier this year by stopping Pavel Silyagin in eight rounds.
