Jack Turner needed only 27 rounds to rack up 13 wins after his first professional victory, and the fact that he may be the most pound‑for‑pound destructive puncher in Britain is now widely recognized
The 23-year-old Turner (13-0, 12 KOs) is the latest off a red-hot production line in Liverpool and he has swiftly emerged as one of the city's big ticket sellers.
But while the excitement around him may be growing, he is in no rush to get to the top although he believes he already beats the world's best junior bantamweight in one department at least.
“You’ve got [Jesse] Bam Rodriguez there at No. 1," Turner tells The Ring. "He is pound-for-pound one of the best fighters in the world but punch-wise I think I hit a lot harder than him.
“I’d love the chance to prove that by fighting him, I’m in this sport to fight the best. But I’m only young so I’m taking it step by step but if it comes around down the line I’d love that fight.”
For now, ‘El Terrier’ is still in the process of honing his craft, although his opponents have not been able to provide him many minutes in which to do so. He started his career with six consecutive first-round knockouts before he was taken the distance over four by Darwing Martinez, despite a pair of knockdowns.
But since that night in June 2024, he has racked up another six stoppages on the spin, with four of those coming inside two rounds. His next assignment lands at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena on February 7 in a showcase of the city’s talent, spearheaded by WBA featherweight champion Nick Ball.
It would take a brave man to predict that little-known Nicaraguan Juan Carlos Martinez Urbina (10-3-1, 4 KOs) will last the scheduled 10 rounds against Turner given how ruthless the youngster has looked so far.
“I really don’t care who you are,” the softly-spoken Turner adds. “When I go in there I’m looking to not just win but to knock my opponent out and cause severe damage to him. He’s trying to take food off my son’s plate and that’s not happening.
“I don’t feel any pressure to keep up my record with the knockouts. I just get in there and do what I’ve got to do really. A fight is a fight, I get in there and do my best and I know the best Jack Turner beats anyone.
“Whoever is stepping in the ring with me is coming to take what’s mine.”
It is no surprise that his fan-friendly style has transferred to an ability to shift tickets at the box office but the sales are not only coming from inside Liverpool.
“I’ve got people coming from Bournemouth, London and Birmingham, everywhere,” he says. “It’s because I’m an exciting fighter.
“But there’s nothing like fighting in your home town because of all the support I get. The atmosphere is unbelievable, I’ve done a lot of tickets. There’s no feeling like it - it’s the best.
"It’s growing and growing with every fight. I have real fans and they come from everywhere, from all up and down the country. Without them it wouldn’t be possible.”
As well as The Ring's No. 3 featherweight Ball, who faces Brandon Figueroa in the main event, Turner is joined by other Liverpool favourites like Ste Clarke, Brad Strand and Andrew Cain as part of the undercard on the Queensberry Promotions show, which will be broadcast live on DAZN.
All of the above are still currently in their 20s and Turner believes that Fantastic Five can be at the heart of a purple patch for one of Britain’s proudest fighting cities.
“There’s loads of good fighters coming out of Liverpool at the moment,” he says. “It’s great that we get a chance to box together on the same show.
“At the top there you’ve got Nick Ball who is a world champion and that’s the sort of people I can look up to and think ‘if he can do it, then why can’t I? It’s going to be a brilliant show.
“And when you look at it, we are all still very young in the sport, I’m only 23 and have a long way to go but fight-by-fight I’ll get there.
“I want to fight the best but it takes time. I am slowly climbing the ladder to get where I want to be. When the time is right I’m going to be No. 1. If it’s Bam who is still there, then I’ll prove it against him.”
