The latest update on Isis Sio’s health status is incredibly positive.
Sio, a 19-year-old junior flyweight contender, was placed in a medically induced coma after a first-round knockout loss against Jocelyn Camarillo on Saturday.
ProBoxTV, which staged the show on which Sio and Camarillo were featured, said Monday that she has been taken off a ventilator, is breathing on her own and speaking.
Sio's family and team also shared a statement with media.
"At this time, Isis remains in ICU, but she is off the ventilator and we are hopeful for her progression. We are awaiting further updates from her medical team. She is currently under the care of three specialized medical divisions who are closely monitoring her condition."
Sio was knocked out in 78 seconds of a fight scheduled for four rounds after absorbing four unanswered power shots to her head at National Orange Show Event Center in San Bernardino, California.
Sio slumped to the bottom rope after the combination. Soon after, she was seen convulsing and stretchered out of the ring and immediately treated at the intensive care unit of Loma Linda University Health Medical Center.
Sio turned pro in September and came into the clash versus Camarillo (6-0, 1 KO) with only one win in three fights. Sio, from Dickinson, North Dakota, was coming off a first-round stoppage loss due to body punches on January 30.
Sio's family and team also elaborated on her quick turnaround fight.
"Isis is a passionate, disciplined, and well-prepared athlete who carefully evaluates each opportunity placed before her.”
"Her decision to compete on Saturday, March 21, against Jocelyn Camarillo was not made lightly, but rather thoughtfully reviewed and analyzed prior to acceptance.
"In reference to her previous bout on January 30 against Perla Bazaldua, the result was not due to a head-strike knockout. Instead, it was caused by a liver shot. As is well understood in boxing, a direct blow to the liver can trigger an involuntary physiological response (vasovagal syncope). Because the liver is highly vascularized and rich in nerve supply, such an impact can stimulate the vagus nerve, leading to a sudden drop in blood pressure and heart rate. This may result in temporary paralysis, dizziness, and difficulty breathing.
"Please note, she was on a 45-day suspension and cleared before she accepted the fight with Jocelyn Camarillo.
"We sincerely appreciate the continued support, thoughts, and prayers during this time."
