It appears that Ryan Garcia and Zuffa Boxing/UFC frontman Dana White have found a sweet spot to set a foundation for a working relationship moving forward.
Garcia rocked, dropped, and stopped Conor Benn in short order Saturday to score a second-round stoppage win at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The immediate aftermath of the encounter focused on what's next for the WBC welterweight champion Garcia (26-2, 21 KOs) following the first defense of his title after blasting Benn (25-2, 14 KOs).
Fights against fellow 147-pound titleholders Teofimo Lopez (WBA) and Devin Haney (WBO) make all the sense, but the chips need to fall in place once all of the involved parties leave the gambling capital of the world.
"Here's what I can tell you: There was a lot of wheeling and dealing going on tonight at this event. It's fascinating," White said during the post-fight press conference.
"We'll see how this whole thing plays out. [Garcia] has one more fight [left] with Oscar De La Hoya.
"Garcia looked incredible, and he did everything that he said he was going to do … The stoppage wasn't a horrible stoppage. Could it have gone a couple of more minutes? Probably.
"Ryan has got all the tools. He has knockout power. He speaks really well and is a good-looking kid. The younger generation likes him and follows him, and even kids who don't traditionally follow boxing and watch sports [follow him].
"He's one of the best in the world. He [did] everything that he said he was going to do ... and he ducks nobody. This kid wants to fight everybody. And that's what every fight fan likes."
For at least one more fight, Garcia is still tied to De La Hoya, who was missing in action ringside as his career-long promoter.
But Garcia appeared more than pleased with how the proceedings played out with White and company during his career-best win.
"I was very, very impressed," Garcia said. "I think that they did one of the best jobs with coordinating things with making sure that everything is regulated. I love their process. I know I sound like I'm glazing, but I'm just giving it the truth. Basically, they were on top of everything. The media, the way they promote, it's like I can't keep saying that many great things. Let's just really say I'm very impressed.
"I definitely have the golden ticket, if they want to come get it. We'll decide who we want to give the golden tickets out to. We're Willy Wonka in here ... you're going to see me do amazing things."
