Jaime Munguia believes he has it in him to win a world title at middleweight after his world title tilt with Armando Resendiz at 168 pounds.
After beating Sadam Ali for the WBO junior middleweight strap in 2018, Munguia made five title defenses before heading to middleweight. Ultimately, he had only a handful of fights, none with world title honors on the line, before moving up to super middleweight.
He'll clash with Resendiz for the WBA super middleweight title at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on May 2, live on DAZN.
If Munguia (45-2, 35 KOs) beats The Ring’s No. 6 168-pounder, he would become a two-division world champion. It would be a good feeling, but the Mexican wants more.
“I want to become a three-division world champion,” Munguia told Fight Hub TV. “I want to win this title, defend it, hopefully be able to unify, and then, a challenge for myself if my body allows it, I would like to come down to 160 and manage myself in that division and see what the division holds.”
A middleweight run is likely in his future, but for now, it’s all about Resendiz. The 27-year-old burst onto the scene with The Ring's 2025 Upset of the Year over Caleb Plant last year.
Heading into that fight, Plant was the heavy favorite. And, in the first few rounds, he showed exactly why. But as the fight went deeper and deeper, Resendiz (16-2, 11 KOs) shifted things to his liking. Munguia, though, promises that Resendiz won’t have things go his way.
“I feel like Caleb underestimated him a little bit, maybe took him a little bit lightly,” Munguia said. “Look at what happened in the fight. In the first four rounds, Caleb was doing well and he was winning. All of a sudden, Resendiz gets him with a shot and he loses respect for Plant’s power and everything that transpired after. That’s not gonna happen here. I’m gonna be able to establish myself. That’s what I’m looking to do on May 2.”
