Anthony Joshua may have ended Jake Paul’s relatively short boxing career.
The former unified heavyweight champion landed a right hand that fractured Paul’s jaw in the sixth round of their December 19 bout at Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida. The former YouTube sensation turned fringe cruiserweight contender immediately fell to the canvas and suffered the second defeat of his career, the first by knockout.
Even now, several months removed from that horrific night, Paul’s future still isn’t clear. The 29-year-old Paul hopes, however, to get a bit more clarity on how his recovery is going.
While he’s hoping for the best, Paul did admit that there’s a chance Joshua may have ended his time in the sport.
“I’m getting some new scans here in a couple of days of the jaw to get an update on the healing process,” Paul told Ariel Helwani. “We’ll see what my doctors say. I think I’ll be able to get a more accurate time frame or can I even fight again. That is definitely in the realm of possibility.
“It does feel a lot better as time goes by. But I definitely need to get cleared first. I think it just depends on how the bone heals and there’s also a tooth missing. I’m pretty sure I’m gonna have to get an implanted tooth of some sort. I don’t know how much time that's going to add to things. We’ll just have to see.”
Paul (12-2, 7 KOs), who underwent two surgical procedures on his jaw after their bout, still figures to play a prominent role in the sport thanks to his company, MVP Promotions.
Paul finds great joy in growing his company into a global brand, but he still has the itch to compete.
Prior to getting into the ring with Joshua, Paul was on a six-fight win streak and was coming off arguably the biggest win of his career, a points victory over former champion, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., which resulted in the WBA ranking him in its top 15 in the cruiserweight division.
