Although the time they spent together was relatively brief, the former unified welterweight champion found plenty of value in a priceless experience before Canelo's much-anticipated Terence Crawford showdown this weekend.
It isn’t easy finding someone to emulate the style of Terence Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs), but Canelo Alvarez believes he did the best he could.
With his showdown against the pound-for-pound star taking place this weekend at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada streamed worldwide on Netflix, Alvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs) enlisted the help of Jaron Ennis.
Although he doesn’t fight exactly like Crawford, his ability to switch-hit provided Alvarez with the sort of sparring he needed. Alvarez though, wasn't the only one who benefited.
“Canelo got 67 fights, so it was cool being able to share the ring with him,” Ennis explained to YSM Sports Media on their YouTube channel. “Having fun and learning different things. The work was great. I loved being in there with Canelo, had a great time sparring him.”
Ennis, who recently dropped his Ring, IBF, and WBA welterweight titles to move up in weight, will make his 154-pound debut against Uisma Lima (14-1, 10 KOs) on Oct. 11 at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
Although he rarely takes days off, Ennis will watch Alvarez-Crawford from his palatial estate to see how their megafight plays out.
The Omaha, Nebraska native is ranked No. 3 on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list, but will be fighting for the first time at 168 pounds for Alvarez's undisputed throne.
In terms of picking sides, Ennis (34-0, 30 KOs, 1 NC) remains impartial.
For now, he’ll continue to focus on his career and his upcoming opponent. While always confident that he would come out on top next month and look good doing it, he believes his time with Alvarez was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and well-needed.
“He’s a Hall of Famer, legend, and kind of like the face of boxing,” Ennis continued. “It was great.”
