Jai Opetaia is widely regarded as the world's best cruiserweight at present.
On May 2 however, fellow cruiserweight titlist Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez defends his WBA and WBO cruiserweight belts against WBC light heavyweight champion, David Benavidez, making his debut in the weight division.
The former sparring partners turned multi-weight champions take top billing at Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena atop a pay-per-view card Amazon's Prime Video and DAZN will distribute in the United States, starting at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT; $79.99). Subscribers to DAZN’s Ultimate plan can view the Benavidez-Ramirez show for no additional charge.
In recent months, Opetaia (30-0, 23 KOs) has made his prediction and wants to fight the winner. However, according to David's father and trainer Jose Benavidez Sr., he doubts that would be much of a competitive contest.
"Is he a dangerous fighter? Not now," Benavidez Sr. told Sean Zittel on his YouTube channel. "I think in a couple of years. To me, it's like taking a tune-up with Opetaia at this point."
Opetaia outboxed and cruised to a wide 12-round points win over Brandon Glanton on his Zuffa Boxing debut last month, netting him Zuffa's inaugural 200-pound title but was memorably stripped of the IBF crown weeks later.
Benavidez Sr. watched the fight and believes Opetaia has a lot to work on.
"Opetaia, I think he's a great fighter. He's doing well but still needs experience. In his last fight, I think he held back; looked a little tired and was struggling in there. He did win pretty much all the rounds but I just think he needs a little more experience [at world-level]. We'd fight him tomorrow."
