Only one fight remains between Katie Taylor and retirement.
The 39-year-old legend, who ranks No. 1 on The Ring’s women’s pound-for-pound list, didn’t reveal too many details Wednesday surrounding her next bout. She did confirm that her next outing will be her last.
“We’re still trying to figure the details out, but I do have one fight this year,” Taylor said in an interview with RTE News. “It’s kind of like my retirement fight. I just want to fight in Dublin to end my career. Obviously, we're still hoping for Croke Park, we’re hanging on to a bit of hope that it can happen.”
If her next fight proves the final one, it would end one of the greatest boxing careers in the sport’s history, regardless of gender.
Born in Bray, Ireland, Taylor (25-1, 6 KOs) began boxing aged 12. After developing her skills, she went on to win countless amateur medals.
Her crowning amateur achievement was the gold medal she took home from the 2012 London Olympics. Four years later, she fell short at the quarter-final stage of the Rio Olympics, but didn't let that disappointment faze her in the paid code.
Turning pro soon afterwards, she stacked up the hardware with consistency at the championship level. She became a two-division undisputed champion and currently holds that distinction at junior welterweight.
Taylor immediately avenged her lone loss – a majority decision to England’s Chantelle Cameron in May 2023 – by winning a majority decision in their November 2023 rematch.
Taylor proved that she’s still at the top of her game last summer, sweeping her trilogy with Amanda Serrano. After winning their first two meetings by close decisions, Taylor outpointed Serrano again July 11 at Madison Square Garden.
For Taylor, the perfect end to her storybook career would be a Croke Park fight, the home venue for several professional and amateur soccer clubs, along with rugby and several other sports. The last professional bout to take place there was in July 1972, when one Muhammad Ali defeated Alvin Lewis via 11th-round stoppage.
In 2022, after grabbing a split decision over Serrano in their first meeting, Taylor and Eddie Hearn, her longtime promoter, expressed their desire to have their rematch at Croke Park and away from Madison Square Garden.
Ultimately, Taylor had no issue winning another close split decision on the road at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
If Taylor gets what she wants, it would be just her third pro fight on home soil after consecutive bouts with Cameron took place at Dublin's 3Arena.
While Croke Park remains her first choice, she’s open to other venues, provided she ends her career in Ireland.
“If it doesn’t happen there are plenty of options there,” Taylor said. “I have obviously fought in the 3Arena a couple of times, the Aviva Stadium is also there. l'Il be ending my career [in Ireland] and I'm very, very excited about that.”
