The Ring’s Mike Coppinger confirmed Friday that Davis’ team informed the WBO that he will not move forward with the 12-round, 147-pound championship clash the sanctioning body ordered June 30, when it named Davis the mandatory challenger for Haney’s belt. Davis’ decision denied fans one of the most intriguing fights that can be made in boxing.

Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc., Davis’ promoter and Haney’s former promoter, won the purse bid for Haney versus Davis on Thursday at WBO headquarters in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Davis had until 11 a.m. ET on Saturday to decide if he would take the fight.

Haney (33-0-1, 15 KOs, 1 NC) would have received 75 percent of Top Rank’s $8.55 million bid, in accordance with WBO rules for mandated matches, which amounted to just over $6.4 million for the Oakland native. Davis (15-0, 10 KOs, 1 NC), a former WBO lightweight champ from Norfolk, Virginia, would have earned the remaining 25 percent, just over $2.1 million.

Top Rank proposed that the fight take place on October 3 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, State Farm Arena in Atlanta or Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

Davis, 27, would’ve made his debut at the welterweight limit against Haney had he not withdrawn from the mandated matchup. His last two fights, a 12th-round stoppage of Jamaine Ortiz and a unanimous points victory over Nahir Albright, both were contested at the junior welterweight limit of 140 pounds.

Brian Norman Jr. is the WBO’s second-ranked welterweight, but it isn’t clear if the WBO will order Haney to take a rematch with him. Haney, The Ring’s No. 1-ranked welterweight for an unclaimed championship, beat Norman (29-1, 23 KOs, 1 NC) by unanimous decision to win the WBO title on November 22 at ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Haney became a three-division champion by beating Norman, of Conyers, Georgia. Haney, 27, is ranked No. 8 on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list.

Teofimo Lopez (22-2, 13 KOs) is ranked third by the WBO, but he is scheduled to challenge WBA champ Rolando “Rolly” Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) on August 22 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Former eight-division champion Manny Pacquiao (62-8-3, 39 KOs) and Arnold Barboza Jr. (33-1, 11 KOs) are ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, by the WBO.
