The original Rocky movie is regarded as a cinematic masterpiece. In November, the film will mark its 50th anniversary.
To celebrate the occasion of the ultimate sports movie, franchise creator Sylvester Stallone's story of betting on himself to write the script and star as the fictional boxer Rocky Balboa is being made into its own movie.
"I Play Rocky" stars Anthony Ippolito, who portrays the aspiring actor-filmmaker and struggling Philadelphia boxer that Stallone dreamed up. On Wednesday, Amazon MGM Studios debuted the movie's trailer ahead of its limited theatrical release on November 6.
The making-of film's origin story and synopsis are described with the following: "I Play Rocky is an electrifying true story about an unknown actor with an unshakable belief that he wasn’t just meant to write Rocky – he was meant to be Rocky Balboa. Told 'no' at every turn, Sylvester Stallone bets everything on himself, holding the line on playing the lead against seemingly impossible odds. The result is the ultimate underdog story behind the ultimate underdog movie."
"I Play Rocky" is directed by Peter Farrelly and also stars Matt Dillon, AnnaSophia Robb, P.J. Byrne, Toby Kebbell, Tracy Letts, Jay Duplass, Stephan James, Kiki Seto, Robert Morgan, Saul Stein, Trevor St. John, Erik Palladino, and Rob Demery.
Ippolito previously played Al Pacino in "The Offer," a miniseries chronicling the making of "The Godfather."
The "Rocky" series of movies, which has expanded with "Creed" in recent years, is one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time, earning nearly $2 billion in global box office alone.
"Rocky" was made in 1976 on a $1 million budget and netted nearly $225 million for its initial release. And it won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Film Editing. The "Italian Stallion" Stallone was also nominated for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay.
A theatrical re-release remastered in 4K is also planned for November.
