Malik Scott loves Naoya Inoue’s skills, but he doesn’t believe those otherworldly abilities will save him Saturday night.
Inoue will defend his Ring, IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO junior featherweight titles against Junto Nakatani at a sold-out Tokyo Dome. Oddsmakers expect Inoue to win, with some having him as high as a 5-1 favorite in advance of what’s been billed as the biggest bout between Japanese fighters in the country’s history.
Scott, a retired heavyweight who has become a successful trainer, disagrees. The way he sees it, The Ring’s sixth-rated pound-for-pound fighter, a three-division champion in his own right, has all the tools to go out there and get the job done.
“Nakatani is a southpaw,” Scott explained during the newest episode of “Inside The Ring,” which premiered Monday on DAZN. “Nakatani has long limbs, and he’s a southpaw that doesn’t go the original way that southpaws go when they fight. He actually goes to the power hand, he challenges your power hand, and when you throw it, he makes you pay. I’m going with Nakatani by decision.”
It’s been difficult to pick against the renowned Inoue, The Ring’s No. 2-ranked pound-for-pound fighter. The Japanese superstar has won world titles in four weight classes and often leaves divisions in shambles. Inoue (32-0, 27 KOs) made it look easy in his last two fights against a pair of highly respected contenders, Murodjon Akhmadaliev (14-2, 11 KOs) and Alan Picasso (32-1-1, 27 KOs), who both lost unanimous decisions to him.
Nakatani (32-0, 24 KOs), on the other hand, struggled in his 122-pound debut December 27 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Although he beat Mexico’s Sebastian Hernandez (20-1, 18 KOs) by unanimous decision in “The Ring V: Night of the Samurai” co-feature before Inoue defeated Picasso, it wasn’t Nakatani’s best night at the office.
DAZN’s coverage of the Inoue-Nakatani undercard is set to start Saturday at 5:40 a.m. ET in the U.S. and 10:40 a.m. BST in the UK.
