Massey talks Clarke challenge, rejecting move to heavyweight

Professional fighters earn plenty of praise for showing heart, toughness and dedication but their most underrated skill may just be the ability to answer the same questions time and again.
Among the top of any list of irritating enquiries would be questions about how training camp has gone, or being asked for a fight prediction.
"When are you out next?" might just be the most frustrating one, however. Unfortunately, it is a question that cruiserweight contender Jack Massey has had to answer time and time again over the past 18 months.
Massey (23-3, 13 KOs) finally has an answer.
This weekend, he fights 2020 Olympian and former British champion Cheavon Clarke (11-2, 8 KOs). The 10-round fight will be the first of a new contract with Zuffa Boxing, appearing set to provide him the activity he's long craved.
Massey is a former European and Commonwealth titleholder and in October 2024, challenged Ring cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia for his IBF and Ring titles. On the face of it, the 33-year-old has enjoyed a successful career but never been able to generate the momentum allowing him to fulfil his true potential.
"I've never had that. I've probably only fought a maximum three times in a year once or twice. It's only been two fights a year throughout my whole career. It's a breath of fresh air to be honest," Massey told The Ring.
"You always think, 'I've got a take-off pad, it's going to just snowball'.
"Then with the European and Commonwealth titles, even though we had to give them up to fight for the world title, I still thought we'd be in big fights after that. It's been a funny one."
Championship calibre fighters have long known that they will have their hands full with Massey and the 13-year pro from Derbyshire has always shown enough to prevent young, circling vultures from swooping in, attempting to take his name. The combination has left him in a frustrating spot.
Back in January 2023, a lack of 200-pound openings persuaded Massey to accept a fight with former WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker. He lost a 10-round decision but nonetheless emerged with plenty of credit.
Massey stands 6-foot-4 and spends his days training alongside heavyweight contenders Lawrence Okolie and Frazer Clarke. Whilst waiting for his moment, opportunities abounded in the sport's glamour division and it must have been tempting to change course and once again explore his options up at heavyweight.
"Not really," Massey said. "I've had four-to-six months doing rounds with Frazer and Lawrence thinking, 'Do you know what? I wouldn't mind having a go at this but we'll see what we can do at cruiserweight and if we can't get anything, maybe have another look.'"
The Zuffa deal means Massey can push any heavyweight thoughts to the back of his mind.
This weekend he can make himself a major player in a bubbling cruiserweight mix when facing Clarke at the Bournemouth International Centre, broadcast live on Sky Sports in the UK and Paramount+ in U.S. territories.
"I never watched a lot of him until I was there at his fight with Viddal Riley," Massey said.
"He looks to try and box a lot for a smaller guy, rather than try get inside and rough people up, but I think that'll suit me to a T."
Clarke blazed through the British cruiserweight division and forged a reputation as an effective inside fighter. Since reaching world level though, he has encountered more resistance. In December 2024 he lost a decision to unbeaten Leonardo Mosquera in their vacant European title fight and last April, was outboxed by Riley.
Both Mosquera and Riley hold top-10 rankings with The Ring and Massey believes that Clarke's dwindling form - and more considered style - is a result of facing better competition rather than a degradation in his skills.
"I think he's probably been fighting these guys, knocking them out and getting them out of there. Because he's not actually been a pro that long, I think it's probably the later rounds that's given him a bit of anxiety," Massey said.
"He's probably tested his fitness, been clipped and thought, can't be just going out there with these elite-level guys or British level guys and just getting them out of there."
