Following an impressive win over former title challenger Austin "Ammo" Williams, Vito Mielnicki isn't satisfied winning under-the-radar fights any longer.
After turning what many perceived as a 50/50 fight against Austin “Ammo” Williams into a lopsided points win on September 4, Mielnicki is officially calling his shot.
“I want world title fights,” Mielnicki said on Ring Champs Podcast’s YouTube channel.
“I feel like I’m right there in line for a title fight. If not a title fight, I know there’s some names coming from 154. Maybe a Xander Zayas at the Garden or something. I would love that, love to get that done.”
24-year-old Zayas wants to bounce back in a major way after the Puerto Rican was thoroughly outclassed by Jaron "Boots" Ennis on June 27 at Brooklyn's Barclays Center.
Despite a defiant third round where he buzzed Ennis, Zayas was dropped three times and eventually stopped 1:49 into the seventh frame of their WBA/WBO junior middleweight title fight.
Having surrendered his WBA and WBO titles this summer, Zayas (23-1, 13 KOs) is expected to make a formal announcement he'll be moving up in weight before returning next year.
Mielnicki calls the 160-pound division his home, having told The Ring's Keith Idec of the divisional shift before facing Connor Coyle in February 2025. Happy with the development shown under trainer Ronnie Shields, Mielnicki (24-1, 13 KOs) could well be fighting for world honors in the coming months.
The WBO mandated Denzel Bentley to defend his 160-pound title against top-ranked contender Yoenli Hernandez, with Warriors Boxing winning a purse bid streamed on September 29. Bentley (22-3-1, 18 KOs) recently appealed to the sanctioning body, hopeful he can bypass that order for a voluntary defense against Shane Mosley Jr.
Bentley has recently signed a multi-fight deal with Zuffa Boxing, where he'll return in the chief support bout against the American on November 7 at London's Copper Box Arena.
At the time of writing, the WBO are considering his request and if rejected, No. 3-rated contender Mielnicki will likely get the call for a vacant title opportunity against Hernandez (11-0, 9 KOs).
Former titleholder Tim Tszyu, currently No. 2 in the rankings, is close to agreeing terms for a title fight with WBA champion Erislandy Lara.
Whoever is next, the Matchroom-backed Mielnicki doesn't believe anyone stands above him in a wide-open division at 160 pounds.
"All of the guys at the top level are where they are for a reason, but I'm the best middleweight," he insisted.
