Armando Resendiz is set to face Jaime Munguia on May 2 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas as part of a Cinco de Mayo weekend show headlined by David Benavidez vs. Gilberto Ramirez.
Resendiz (16-2, 11 KOs) will be fighting for the first time since shocking Caleb Plant for a split-decision win in May for The Ring’s 2025 Upset of the Year.
Munguia (45-2, 35 KOs) also last fought in May and earned a unanimous decision in a rematch against Bruno Surace. But the win proved to be controversial, as he tested positive for a banned substance that later was ruled "caused by accidental contamination with Pregnenolone, a legal, non-banned substance."
Once Munguia was announced as the challenger for the WBA super middleweight titleholder, the first order of business Resendiz trainer Manny Robles requested was an even playing field.
“Absolutely we're worried,” Robles told The Ring. “That's the first thing I asked for when I talked to Resendiz's team, to make sure there is VADA testing involved. Let's hope that there will be VADA testing, just to be on the safe side.
“There are a lot of questions that we don't have an answer for. He tested positive. How can they come in and say he's not at fault and let's forgive you for your mistake? I don't understand how or why he can be forgiven, but when you're wrong, you're wrong. I don't get it.”
Munguia emerged as the chosen one for Resendiz from a group headlined by Jermall Charlo and Edgar Berlanga.
Before beating Surace, Munguia suffered a one-punch, sixth-round knockout loss to the Frenchman in The Ring’s 2024 Upset of the Year.
Robles said Resendiz, The Ring’s No. 6 super middleweight, will be ready and even better than before for the all-Mexican matchup.
“We've been in the gym, training for months, waiting for a name and a date,” he said. “Resendiz hasn't stopped working. He's a dedicated and disciplined fighter who learned a great deal from the Plant fight. The win just took him to another level. We're going to prove on May 2 how much he’s improved.”
