Hamzah Sheeraz refused to call out "GOAT" Canelo Alvarez but the new WBO super-middleweight champion is open to a clash with the Mexican legend.
Sheeraz claimed the vacant WBO strap by emphatically dispatching Alem Begic in the second round of their clash on the Glory in Giza card in Egypt Saturday night.
Former undisputed super middleweight king Canelo (63-3-2, 39 KOs) watched on from ringside having formally announced his September 12 showdown with WBC champion Christian Mbili at a press conference earlier Saturday.
Almost immediately after his victory over Begic, 26-year-old Sheeraz (23-0-1, 19 KOs) was asked whether he has his sights set on the 35-year-old icon, who he was supposed to fight earlier this year.
But respectful Sheeraz told DAZN: "Listen, I'm not calling him out, he's a GOAT in the sport, if he wins against Mbilli then why not? Let's get it on.
"If Canelo wins, it's up to him. To share the ring with him would be an honor and to get the opportunity, I'll definitely be getting the win, for sure.
"I'll fight anyone. There was boxing royalty at ringside tonight and I'm just trying to follow in their footsteps. I'm just beating whoever is put in front of me. I'm going to collect all the belts."
Sheeraz had it all his own way against 39-year-old Begic, who had arrived in Egypt with a 29-0-1 record.
But it was evident from very early on that the German, somehow ranked at No. 4 with the WBO, was heading for his first defeat, and fast. Sheeraz softened him up in the first and then pressed the pace in the second, forcing the stoppage with 27 seconds left of the round. Begic barely landed a punch.
When asked whether he had hoped for more resistance, Sheeraz said: "I do and I don't. My last fight, over in America against Edgar Berlanga, I think that was kind of my world title fight. But now it’s onto bigger and better things, I want all the champions."
Arsenal fan Sheeraz had donned the red and white of the north London club at Friday's weigh-in after their Premier League title was confirmed earlier in the week.
Sheeraz joked that they had piled the pressure on him but then urged Mikel Arteta’s side to follow up his explosive win by clinching the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain next Saturday.
He said: "Arsenal set the tone didn't they? They put a little bit of pressure on me but I'll hand the baton over to them and hopefully they do the double."
