Career-long coach and confidant Eddy Reynoso realizes that the sand in the hourglass of Canelo Alvarez's boxing career is nearing its expiration.
At 36, Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs) is entering the last stage of his illustrious career. He plans on becoming a three-time super middleweight champion Saturday when he faces WBC titleholder Christian Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs) at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The matchup will headline a “Mexico Versus The World” show that DAZN will offer to subscribers of its Ultimate plan and on pay-per-view. Ring walks are estimated to begin at 4:30 p.m. ET in the United States and 8:30 p.m. GMT in the United Kingdom.
Alvarez intends to prove that he still has plenty left in the tank to outlast the relentless Mbilli after losing to Terence Crawford 13 months ago.
“He still enjoys it despite his age. I’m telling you, 70 fights ... he’s already in his final fights – that is no secret,” Reynoso said during “The Return Of Canelo Alvarez,” a documentary produced by DAZN. “He has returned recharged. He is more motivated and, above all, he has unfinished business. And that’s what has driven him to work harder for the fight. As long as he is focused, motivated, and as long as his physical condition, his qualities, everything flows well, he remains at a good level, then he can keep fighting.”
In addition to enduring his third loss as a pro against Crawford, Alvarez sustained injuries that required left elbow surgery. Reynoso has presided over Alvarez's career since the Mexican superstar turned pro at 15 and knows exactly what's required of his charge to regain top form.
So, for the first time in their union, they moved training camp to Spain in order to gain an edge by working alongside Ring heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk and his team.
“When you do things in a certain way, you can beat boxers of a certain level,” Reynoso said. “But when you face boxers of an exceptional level, that 1 percent and 2 percent makes the difference between losing and winning a fight. So sometimes, you have to work and focus more on each of the areas of your job to achieve that excellence in preparation and for the fights to go well. Sometimes you work like that, too, and you can lose fights because the other team, the other boxer, also thinks and prepares like that.”
Reynoso is certainly envisioning a turn-back-the-clock-like performance from his pupil.
Alvarez hasn’t scored a stoppage win since knocking out Caleb Plant to become the undisputed super middleweight champion for the first time in November 2021. Alvarez was the sport’s pound-for-pound king at the time, but following a 6-2 run featuring workmanlike wins, his position on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list is no longer intact.
The relentless Mbilli won’t make matters easy as Alvarez attempts to revive his career.
“Mbilli comes with great enthusiasm and great physical conditioning,” Reynoso said. "He’s an aggressive fighter, a fighter who goes forward. He is always ready. He is always putting pressure on the fight. A fighter who doesn’t know how to back down and throws a lot of punches; we've faced those kinds of fighters. For Saul, I think it’s the style that comes most easily to him. But we have to work.
“I hope, more than anything, to win the fight and show that we can still be relevant in boxing. As I said, it’s no secret that we already have a very advanced career. We are aware that we are going to take it fight by fight and hope that things turn out in the best way.”
