Schaefer has over a quarter century of experience in the business, and he told The Ring that the well-seasoned Moton has all the ingredients to be one of the future faces of boxing.
The progression and evolution of 18-year-old lightweight phenom Curmel Moton continues Saturday when the Floyd Mayweather Jr. protégé takes on Renny Viamonte at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
Although Moton (7-0, 6 KOs) has quickly proven that he’s must-see TV, his eight-round fight against Viamonte (4-1-1, 2 KOs) will take place on the untelevised portion of the PBC on Prime Video card headlined by Caleb Plant and Jermall Charlo returning in separating fights.
Richard Schaefer, the former Golden Boy Promotions CEO who is currently serving in an advisory and business manager role for Canelo Alvarez, handled the 18-time national champion Moton's career while working with Mayweather in recent years.
Schaefer has over a quarter century of experience in the business, and he told The Ring that the well-seasoned Moton has all the ingredients to be one of the future faces of boxing.
"He's a generational talent and a tremendous young man," Schaefer told The Ring in an interview. "He's got the speed, ring generalship, power, and when he smells blood, he knows how to go for it. It's amazing to see the talent he has given his young age. As a young fighter, you can't learn as much as he knows in a short period of time. You either have it or you don't, and he has the God-given talent.
"I think he’s going to become not only a world champion but a superstar of the sport. He's coming along very nicely, and there is no need to have him rushed. He's learning with each passing fight, and should be moving up the rankings very soon. I'm sure he’s going to be well-equipped once his opportunity comes. If he follows in Floyd's footsteps with focus, hard work, and dedication, and stays away from the distractions and negative influences, I think that the sky's the limit for him."
Everything was seemingly going on track for the Las Vegas-based Moton until a weigh-in snafu last year.
Moton infamously missed weight in November when tipping the scales at 148.7 pounds for a 133-pound catchweight fight against Bryan Mercado.
Moton initially blamed the New Jersey State Athletic Commission for delays in his blood work as the reason why he didn't make weight, which forced his fight to get canceled, but later apologized and admitted that the commission had nothing to do with what happened.
Moton got back into the win column in February with a third-round TKO win against Frank Zaldivar.
Schaefer envisions that Moton, who turns 19 next week, can be a world champion by 2027.
"If the world title opportunity presents itself over the next 24 months, I can definitely see him becoming a world champion," said Schaefer. "He's passed every task in front of him so far with flying colors. I know that Floyd wants to keep him busy.
"Floyd sees greatness. He has a tremendous eye for talent. Just look at what he did with Gervonta Davis after he discovered him. The Mayweather Gym in Las Vegas is a magnet for young talent, and Curmel is the crown jewel of the stable."
