Roy Jones Jr. on how Floyd Mayweather, Shakur Stevenson are the same but different

Shakur Stevenson’s performance against Teofimo Lopez left Roy Jones Jr. in awe.
The way he Stevenson able to avoid Lopez’s offensive output before landing at will, particularly with his jab, was impressive to the former super middleweight icon. More importantly, it also has him believing that Stevenson (25-0, 11 KOs) is this era's version of Floyd Mayweather.
“He is,” Jones told Fight Hub, when asked if Stevenson was similar to Mayweather. “Because he isn’t taking many chances, he isn’t giving guys no chance to beat him.”
Mayweather's accomplishments are well documented. Unbeaten in 50 fights, the 48-year-old won titles in five weight classes, became a box-office superstar attraction and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2022.
Hitting and not getting hit is what Mayweather built his career on, and so has Stevenson. Opponents of the 2016 Olympic silver medalist land just 16.7 percent of their punches, the lowest rate in the sport.
However, Stevenson's and Mayweather's elusiveness is where there similarities end, according to Jones.
Considered an all-time great in his own right, Jones views Stevenson as someone willing to risk his undefeated record against every and anyone. When it comes to Mayweather, on the other hand, Jones believes he was more cautious in his approach to protect his record.
“The difference is he’s fighting everybody,” Jones said.
“He’s not ducking and dodging, he’s fighting everybody. That’s a little different. He can be Floyd Mayweather as far as not being beat in this era, but he’s a little different because he’s willing to take on the biggest challenges.”
