It took him a few rounds to get settled, but Pedro Taduran found his feet to finish with a flourish on his stateside debut April 3.
Much like his compatriot, Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao managed some 25 years ago originally at junior featherweight before moving through the weight divisions, Taduran hopes to establish himself as king in one of the sport's lower weight divisions currently ruled by Ring and unified champion Oscar Collazo (14-0, 11 KOs).
"He [Collazo] tells everyone that he is the king, but I am also declaring myself as a king of the minimumweight division. So to find out who's the real king, we need to settle this in a unification fight," the 11-year pro told Businessmirror.
Having relocated to Southern California in January to enhance his career, the 29-year-old is aware time is of the essence and opportunities beckon after topping another show fronted by Pacquiao's MP Promotions.
Collazo has been somewhat of a Filipino heartbreaker in recent times, beating Vic Saludar, Melvin Jerusalem and most recently Jayson Vayson over the past three years.
Collazo, who scored a sixth-round stoppage of Jesus Haro on March 14, was originally slated to rematch WBC champion Jerusalem (25-3, 12 KOs) before the Jaron Ennis-Vergil Ortiz fallout ensued.
Jerusalem is now occupied with a May 16 rematch of his own against Siyakholwa Kuse, who he pipped to retain the title October 29.
Collazo, who entered The Ring's top 10 pound-for-pound rankings in December, has been called upon to defend his status as the consensus best at 105 pounds.
"It's really simple: Collazo has to stop bullshitting at 105lbs, these nonsense fights that do nothing against opponents that have no shot to win at all," MP Promotions president Sean Gibbons told BoxingScene, suggesting a unification can be made for July or August.
"Give the guy [Taduran] the opportunity; he's earned it. [Collazo] talks that he's top 10 pound-for-pound, Pedro is the most exciting 105-pounder in the world, step up or shut up."
