Since adding Teofimo Lopez’s Ring and WBO junior welterweight titles to his collection on January 31 in New York’s Madison Square Garden, practically everyone has been singing Stevenson’s praises louder than usual.

That universal adulation shouldn’t be given to someone with Stevenson’s style, according to the trainer who watched his son being soundly beaten that night earlier this year.

So while Stevenson does hold a perfect 25-0 record, he doesn’t believe his defensive mentality should be touted.

“They want this kid to be something that he’s not gonna be,” Lopez Sr. said during the latest episode of Mr. Verzace Podcast. “He’s gonna be boring all his life, he’s not good for boxing.”

Stevenson’s preferred weapon of choice that night was the jab, landing a career-high 105 compared to just 16 for Lopez in what quickly proved a defensive masterclass.

Naturally, Team Lopez are keen to put that comprehensive 12-round defeat behind them and the two-division champion stressed as much, pointing to Stevenson's Zuffa move as a reason not to speak about him any longer.

On August 22, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Lopez (22-2, 13 KOs) will attempt to become a three-division champion when challenging WBA welterweight beltholder Rolando “Rolly” Romero (17-2, 13 KOs).

For Lopez Sr., he knows that his son’s stock isn’t particularly high at present but remains confident that will all change. The 58-year-old views a spectacular win over Romero, who hasn't boxed since an upset points win over Ryan Garcia in May 2025, as the remedy needed for Teofimo to catapult himself to the division's very top.

With so much on the line for both men, he believes next weekend's event will showcase a night to remember.

“You’re gonna see something that you’ve never seen,” Lopez Sr. continued. “In boxing, he’s the entertainer. That’s why he does stuff that nobody’s ever seen before. When my son is happy, nobody can beat him.”
