Just like on March 21, George Liddard will find himself overshadowed by events across the Atlantic within a few hours of his main event against Dario Morello.
Last time out it was Austin "Ammo" Williams' unsuccessful world title attempt against long-reigning WBC middleweight champion Carlos Adames.
Now, it's Rolando Romero-Teofimo Lopez for the WBA welterweight crown in Las Vegas. On the undercard, The Ring's No. 2 middleweight Yoenli Hernandez faces a career-best challenge in Argentina's Francisco Daniel Veron (17-1-1, 10 KOs). Naturally, it's a level Liddard wants to surround himself with before much longer.
On Saturday night at London's Copper Box Arena, Liddard (14-0, 8 KOs) will make a third consecutive headline appearance, and it's the sort of stage he believes he belongs on.
He answered some tough questions when called upon by Tyler Denny last time out and enters this with self-belief his rise will continue at the expense of another seasoned opponent.
Morello disagrees. He told local reporters this week that he was unimpressed by Denny's tactical gameplan and would deal with the younger man, nine years his junior, differently.
The Italian has a mountain to climb. He's been dropped in each of his last two fights, wins at domestic and lower European level. His style is awkward, rough and rugged much like Denny, and a paltry 15% knockout ratio in 27 outings shows he's not a concussive puncher.
Yet the Italian boasts far more experience — 115 more professional rounds — than Liddard and a hunger that cannot be quantified. Leaving home comforts for a chance to upset the odds on British shores can often enthuse visitors, much like the risk Cristobal Lorente took twice in recent months.
Liddard will argue he's better-equipped to handle adversity and, given steadily more difficult matchmaking of late, is probably right. That doesn't mean he can afford to be drawn into the veteran's web.
Morello's low forward advances are ungainly at times but he does enough to gain favor with the judges. Liddard has to keep his composure, maintain discipline at range, and jab with intent.
Fantasy
The picks are in from The Ring’s Mike Coppinger. Think you can beat him? Predict winners for prizes.
They said it
George Liddard: "Do I think he's boxed at the level that a few of my previous opponents have? No. Is his style tricky, potentially. I will navigate that, crack the code and get him out of there. He moves a lot, he can run but can't hide. Once I get my feet down and track him down, we'll get the job done. There's not a style I can't beat."
Dario Morello: "I know he's very confident in himself but it's enough. Tyler made everything wrong tactically, George did his homework but I'm not impressed.
"The only thing I'm afraid of is the judges, but I train a lot to make my win so clear and maybe before the 12th round. European championship is the biggest dream of my life, win on Saturday and to the world title, we will see."
What are the odds?
As expected, Liddard is a sizable favorite against a relative unknown in Morello. Most bookmakers have the Italian anywhere from 6/1 (+600) to 17/2 (+850) while there's very little value in the British champion 1/10 (-1000) unless you fancy picking the method of victory (and specific round).
Must-see on the undercard
Liddard's gymmate and fellow middleweight Jimmy Sains (12-0, 10 KOs) has promised a more polishing boxing display as he faces upset-minded Tom Cowling for the Commonwealth crown vacated by Liddard.
After stopping Jake Goodwin to end their pulsating back-and-forth battle, Emmanuel 'Leli' Buttigieg (12-0, 4 KOs) is headed for domestic honors against fellow unbeaten P A Gordon for the vacant English 160-pound title.
Elsewhere on the broadcast, The Ring's No. 3 featherweight Tiah Ayton features in her first 10-rounder against Ellie Hellewell (8-1-1, 1 KO), whose confident words on Thursday suggest she's itching to dim the 20-year-old's shine.
