Moses Itauma moved down two spots in The Ring’s heavyweight top 10 after Filip Hrgovic stopped the previously unbeaten Brit on Saturday night in London.
The Ring’s ratings panel dropped the 21-year-old Itauma to No. 8 in our newest rankings released Monday. Itauma entered their 12-round fight for the then-vacant IBF belt at No. 6, one spot below Croatia’s Hrgovic.
Hrgovic (21-1, 16 KOs) moved up one spot, to No. 4, after defeating the exhausted English southpaw by ninth-round technical knockout at O2 Arena. Itauma (14-1, 12 KOs), who was a 9-1 favorite according to numerous sportsbooks, scored a flash knockdown during the second round, landed various flush punches and was in complete control before the durable Hrgovic took advantage of his conditioning issues and pulled off a stunning upset against a knockout artist who was touted as a future superstar.
Referee Howard Foster stopped the action at 2:27 of the ninth round, just as Ben Davison, Itauma’s trainer, threw the towel into the ring to spare his faded fighter from taking unnecessary punishment.
Cuban contender Frank Sanchez and Nigerian veteran Efe Ajagba moved up one spot apiece in The Ring’s top 10, ahead of Itauma. Sanchez is now No. 6 and Ajagba is No. 7.
Former WBO champ Fabio Wardley also dropped from No. 4 to No. 5 because Hrgovic moved up one position in contention for Oleksandr Usyk’s crown.
Light heavyweight Najee Lopez was the only other fighter who jumped up in The Ring’s ratings based on a result over the weekend.
Lopez (17-0, 14 KOs), of Ellenwood, Georgia, swapped spots with England’s Willy Hutchinson after his strange ninth-round stoppage of Colombia’s Juan Carrillo (15-1, 11 KOs) on Saturday night at USC’s Galen Center in Los Angeles. Lopez is now No. 6 and Hutchinson (20-2, 14 KOs) is No. 7.
