Johnson and members of Devin Haney's team were involved in a physical altercation on January 30, leaving the Cleveland native bloodied.

Two days later, Devin and his father-trainer Bill were arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault after New York pressed charges from the incident.

Johnson has listened to plenty give their take on what happened, but rather than continuing to stay silent, he shared his side of the story.

“First off, I don’t even know them,” Johnson told The Ring’s CEO Rick Reeno on the latest episode of Mr. Verzace Podcast.

“I don’t know none of his team. After Devin won against Brian Norman, I did a podcast with Shawn Porter, we were talking about that card, said nothing bad about the dude and gave him praise for how he looked.

“Probably a couple days after that podcast got released, he started calling me out. So now he's in my messages talking crazy, reckless and disrespecting me for no reason.

“Fast forward to New York, I’m at the [Shakur Stevenson-Teofimo Lopez] weigh-ins and it’s time to leave. I’m in the aisle waiting for them [Team Haney] to walk past. His little brother [Sean Haney], I didn't know that was his brother at the time, said something disrespectful to me. I checked him.

“Then some older dude, old enough to be my father, he’s like ‘who is you? I’ll smack you.’ So now me and him going back-and-forth, he punches me. So now I'm defending myself ... next thing you know, it's 10 people jumping me.

“Devin was getting interviewed. Security came and broke it up, I told them that I left my jacket and phone, can't leave without my stuff. They were making sure everything was cool. I don’t know if he [the guard] was part of it or what, but he was like 'come with me.'

“We go back into the front door, I’m looking on the ground trying to find my phone. I’m not even thinking about them anymore. I’m just trying to get my stuff and leave. I look up, Devin punches me and ran. He took off so fast, he was scared to fight me. You would think the cops was chasing him, the way he took off running.

“Then Bill comes from behind and puts me in a chokehold. Ten people started jumping me again. Everybody’s got their cameras in my face and I’m screaming like do something. Where the hell is security? I fall back on top of Bill and he still got me in a chokehold.

“Everybody on the internet is saying that I jumped Bill or he got jumped, tried to break it up, he’s the one that put me in a chokehold. I’m getting kicked and stomped on. They trying to paint this picture like I was trying to fight his brother, trying to disrespect him, or Devin didn’t do nothing cause he was getting interviewed. No, he punched me and ran. He started this whole thing.”

Haney (33-0, 15 KOs, 1 NC), The Ring’s No. 1 welterweight and WBO champion, has kept quiet while going through legal proceedings from that incident.

The 27-year-old three-division beltholder hopes to return later this year and has been linked with several names, though nothing has been finalized.

Johnson (18-0, 8 KOs) also wants another fight to close out his campaign. The highly-ranked contender scored a lopsided decision win over Christopher Guerrero on July 4, after which he called out Haney directly.

“That’s the fight I want,” Johnson continued. “But he doesn’t want to fight me.”
