Delante “Tiger” Johnson told the world exactly who he wants to face following his latest victory.
After scoring a lopsided victory on Saturday night against Christopher Guerrero in Cleveland, the highly ranked welterweight contender looked directly into the camera and called out reigning WBO beltholder Devin Haney.
If the two do eventually met, Haney would be the odds-on favorite. However, according to Brian “Bomac” McIntyre, Johnson’s trainer, the betting odds wouldn’t bother them at all. He's confident that his fighter would knock Haney (33-0, 15 KOs) off his high horse.
“Devin is a great fighter and that’s why he’s where he’s at,” McIntyre told FightHype.com recently. “But we’ll decipher what he does best and what he does worse and we’ll just go get the win.”
Stacking up victories is what Johnson (18-0, 8 KOs) does well, but Haney’s done it at a higher level. The Ring’s No. 1 welterweight began his third divisional reign thanks to a points victory over Brian Norman in November.
Haney’s preference is a big-time matchup against Shakur Stevenson. He also would fight Keyshawn Davis, his WBO mandatory challenger and No. 1 contender. That bout was also recently mandated.
A fight against Johnson may not qualify as a big fight in Haney’s eyes, but there is a storyline.
In January, Johnson and members of Haney’s team got into a physical altercation. Soon after, Johnson reportedly took the matter to court.
