Adam Booth insists that he and IBF junior middleweight champion, Josh Kelly, would be more than willing to take on new WBO & WBA champion, Jaron “Boots” Ennis, in a major 154-pound unification fight.
On July 25, Kelly (18-1-1, 9 KOs) heads for Saudi Arabia to make the first defense of his IBF title on the undercard of Anthony Joshua's heavyweight fight with Albanian's unproven knockout artist Kristian Prenga.
It has yet to be confirmed but widely believed that Ireland's Caoimhin Agyarko (18-0, 7 KOs) will be the opponent.
During an appearance on talkSPORT, Kelly’s longtime trainer and manager Booth, made sure to emphasize that he and Kelly are fully focused on the task at hand - whoever it may be against.
However, he also took the opportunity to remind people that they agreed to fight Ennis (36-0, 32 KOs) before the 32-year-old from Sunderland stunned Bakhram Murtazaliev to become the IBF champion on January 31.
Of course, given that Ennis and Kelly now hold three 154-pound world title belts between them, yesterday’s price is unlikely to be today’s price and a new deal may need to be negotiated.
Yet Booth insists that the pair have already proven their intent and ambition by accepting the fight once, with absolutely no reason to avoid it now the rewards are even greater.
“Should the “Boots” Ennis fight be offered to us, that we know can be offered to us - and a lot of this is in Eddie Hearn’s hands - then he already knows that we'll take the fight,” Booth said.
“It's obvious that “Boots” Ennis is the favorite for the business, DAZN for Matchroom. Everyone’s
saying that he’s the next pound-for-pound star. Great. It's a fight that we've already agreed to prior to them winning the belts and we'll absolutely agree to now that they've both got belts.”
The exciting win over Zayas made Ennis a two-weight world champion and elevated him to the top of The Ring’s junior middleweight rankings and to No.9 on the pound-for-pound list.
Booth has been a huge believer in Kelly’s talent and potential since they started working together and Ennis’ stoppage of the young Puerto Rican hasn’t affected his belief that The Ring’s No.6 junior middleweight Kelly is more than capable of causing one of the world's very best fighters serious problems.
“I'm not going to tell you that,” he said when pressed as to how Kelly would pull off what would be a monumental win.
“Styles make fights. Firstly, “Boots” has never boxed anyone as a professional that has the different styles that Josh has and vice versa.
“”Boots” has long time been proven as a world champion at welterweight and now at junior middleweight. Josh is a new champion now evolving and developing as a world champion. I see that as the most fascinating and exciting challenge for Josh and for me to prove just how far his obvious abilities can go.”
