NEW YORK — Jahi Tucker continued his march toward a middleweight title shot by knocking off an undefeated contender Saturday night.
The Brooklyn-bred Tucker got off to a fast start, withstood Cedeno’s pressure and outboxed the Dominican southpaw to win their 10-round bout by majority decision on the Xander Zayas-Jaron Ennis undercard at Barclays Center.
Judges Tony Lundy (98-92) and Don Trella (97-93) scored eight and seven rounds for Tucker, who settled for a draw on Dave Braslow’s card.
Tucker (17-1-1, 7 KOs) has won seven consecutive fights since an eight-round majority draw with Francisco Veron (then 13-0) in December 2023. Cedeno, 26, who represented the Dominican Republic at the 2021 Summer Olympics, dropped to 14-1-1 (12 KOs).
“I definitely feel like I did enough,” Tucker, 23, told DAZN’s Chris Mannix after winning IBF, WBC and WBO regional titles. “I feel like I controlled the pace of the fight. Every time he tried to bang, I controlled the action with my jab, made him keep resetting.”
About 20 seconds into the 10th round, Tucker lifted Cedeno off his feet because he pushed down on his neck and wouldn’t let go. That tactic drew a warning from referee David Fields, who previously admonished Tucker for a low blow.
Tucker took the fight to Cedeno for much of the remainder of the final round.
Tucker’s movement mostly kept him out of Cedeno’s punching range in the eighth and ninth rounds. He threw punches only in spurts, but he was still more effective than Cedeno.
Tucker landed multiple uppercuts as they fought on the inside during the seventh. None of those punches hurt Cedeno, but those shots and Tucker’s defensive effectiveness probably won him the round.
Tucker caught Cedeno with a left hook a little less than a minute into the sixth. Cedeno continued to apply pressure, but he didn’t land many punches.
Tucker lunged and landed a right hand early in the fifth, but was cautious otherwise and boxed off his back foot.
Cedeno’s body work seemed to slow down Tucker by the fourth, when Tucker was more of a stationary target. Cedeno and Tucker traded power punches throughout an action-packed third.
A sweeping left by Cedeno landed with just under 40 seconds to go in the second. Tucker wasn’t as active or accurate in those three minutes as he was during a very successful first.
Fields warned Tucker for what looked like a retaliatory low blow with just under 30 seconds on the clock in the first. Cedeno took just a few seconds to recover before the action continued.
Tucker attacked Cedeno as soon as the fight started and landed several flush punches. Cedeno connected with a hard left that halted his momentum.
