The next phase of Vito Mielnicki Jr.’s career will begin against an undefeated opponent April 11.
Sampson Lewkowicz, Mielnicki’s new promoter, announced Tuesday morning that Mielnicki will oppose Omar Huerta in a 10-round main event at Boardwalk Hall’s Adrian Phillips Theater in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The card headlined by Mielnicki and Huerta will be streamed by ProBox TV.
Mielnicki, the WBO’s fifth-ranked middleweight contender, represents a significant step up in competition for the 29-year-old Huerta (15-0-1, 13 KOs), of San Ysidro, California. Huerta, 29, settled for a six-round split draw with Mexico’s Antonio Barajas (9-9-1, 1 KO) in his last fight nine months ago and has faced only three opponents with winning records since he turned pro in February 2020.
Mielnicki (22-1, 13 KOs, 1 NC), of Roseland, New Jersey, hasn’t lost in almost five years, not since Philadelphia’s James Martin upset him by majority decision in an eight-round bout that took place in April 2021. He stopped Italy’s Samuel Nmomah (21-1, 5 KOs) in the ninth round of his most recent fight on “The Ring IV: Night of the Champions” undercard November 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
There was a time it seemed Mielnicki would sign with Zuffa Boxing, but he ultimately preferred Lewkowicz’s promotional plan.
Mielnicki, 23, will fight regularly in Atlantic City to try to capitalize on his popularity in his home state. He was previously promoted by Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc., and has fought five times at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey’s largest city.
Dwyke Flemmings Jr. (11-0, 10 KOs), a junior middleweight prospect from Paterson, New Jersey, will box Yan Marcos in the 10-round co-feature April 11.
The Cuban-born Marcos (14-0, 10 KOs), who resides and trains in Miami, has won four straight bouts by knockout. The 25-year-old southpaw is the WBA’s No. 15 contender in the 154-pound division.
Flemmings, 22, has boxed beyond the fourth round only once since he turned pro four years ago.
