Earlier this month, Gilley admitted he'd rejected offers to fight for European honours and was eager to end this chapter of his career.
Sam Gilley's seven-month absence is set to end on the Fabio Wardley vs. Justis Huni undercard June 7, though it will not be the long-anticipated Louis Greene rematch originally scheduled last winter.
Commonwealth and former English junior-middleweight champion Gilley (18-1, 9 KOs) eased beyond short-notice opponent Jack McGann on his Queensberry debut in October, hopeful there would be a solution to the situation that saw him waiting patiently for a big opportunity at 154-pounds.
In Thursday's latest British championship circular update, Davis (13-2, 6 KOs) was named as Gilley's next opponent after stewards approved a request for a voluntary defence on the same date.
Editor’s note: This piece has been amended as multiple sources informed The Ring after publication that the specific section of said Circular was incorrect - Davis will not be fighting Gilley after all.
The reason behind Greene's withdrawal wasn't disclosed and an official announcement that Gilley-Greene 2 is again off hasn't yet been publicised by the promotion.
Both boxers were set to feature as part of Wednesday's Portman Road press conference in Ipswich, though neither were there and instead, the top table featured Wardley's manager Dillian Whyte announcing his return next month.
Earlier this month, Gilley admitted he'd rejected offers to fight for European honours and was eager to end this chapter of his career.
He told Boxing Now: "I just can't wait to get it over and done with, feels like I've been talking about it forever now - he probably feels the same - was 29 when I first fought him, I'll be 31 after this and it's taken a huge chunk out of my career.
"It's partly my fault, could've gone over the British and onto other things but I've wanted this title since I was a kid, can't wait to get it wrapped around my waist... frustrating but part of the game."
Four months after their first meeting, Junaid Bostan vs. Bilal Fawaz 2 is in the works to decide the new titleholder of Gilley's old belt, vacated to face Greene in their entertaining 12-round battle.
Gilley, gymmates with junior-welterweight Liam Dillon (15-1-2, 3 KOs), joked that he's the odd one out - Dillon clinched Southern Area, English and British junior-lightweight titles before now challenging unbeaten Irish contender Pierce O'Leary (16-0, 9 KOs) on the Wardley-Huni undercard for vacant EBU European honours at 140-pounds.
Davis, whose two defeats came on short-notice against Josh Kelly (MD12) and Serhii Bohachuk (RTD6) on a pair of Riyadh Season cards in 2024, was scheduled to box Ryan Kelly on Matchroom's Sheffield card April 19 before withdrawing himself through injury and being replaced by Caoimhin Agyarko.
Agyarko was victorious that night and per Davis' promoter Eddie Hearn, they will feature on the Lewis Crocker vs. Paddy Donovan 2 undercard later this year.
The Leeds-based contender recovered quickly from his undisclosed issue, spending time training out in Miami, Florida to complete rounds with former IBF world super-middleweight title challenger Vladimir Shishkin (16-1, 10 KOs) last month.
While Gilley has kept it domestic with sparring recently, from Denzel Bentley and Sam King to Alfie Gaskin and former Southern Area champion Paul Gordon, the 30-year-old is enjoying life stateside.
After his Miami trip, he has since ventured to Las Vegas, Nevada for rounds with the WBO's No. 6-ranked middleweight contender Troy Isley (14-0, 5 KOs) and Norfolk welterweight prospect Keon Davis (3-0, 2 KOs) this week.
