Warren: Buatsi-Hutchinson winner too much for Whittaker

Frank Warren believes that Ben Whittaker has “a long, long way to go” after seeing the light heavyweight contender survive a late crisis to outpoint Conor Wallace on Saturday night.
The victory cemented Whittaker’s position as the mandatory challenger for Dmitry Bivol’s IBF title. It also raised serious questions over whether the 29-year-old is equipped for that level of competition.
Joshua Buatsi and Willy Hutchinson have a rematch scheduled for November 7 at Manchester’s AO Arena. They’ll fight for the WBC interim 175-pound championship.
If Whittaker’s team decides to give him another test before putting him in with Bivol, who holds The Ring, IBF, WBA and WBO belts, Warren would happily field calls about a fight with either.
“I’d make those matches with him all day,” Warren, a Hall-of-Fame promoter, said during an interview with Playbook Boxing. “Winner or loser. They’d have too much for him.”
Warren had a ringside seat when Whittaker seemed to wilt under a determined effort from Liam Cameron in October 2024. After five increasingly ragged rounds, the pair toppled backward over the ropes and Whittaker left ringside in a wheelchair. The fight was declared a technical draw.
Whittaker teamed up with a new trainer in Andy Lee, regrouped and stopped Cameron in short order during the rematch. He then reeled off three consecutive quick knockout wins.
His old problems resurfaced Saturday night. Wallace offered little but stubbornness over the first nine rounds, but the moment he began to take some risks and upped his output, Whittaker came apart alarmingly.
Warren made it clear that he doesn’t believe Whittaker is ready for a step up in class.
“Anyone who makes that fight should be reported to the NSPCC [National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children],” Warren said. “I’m only telling you how it is. [Whittaker] is a nice guy. Good luck to him, and Matchroom have done a good job in promoting him. He’s got everybody talking about him, but you’ve got to have some substance then. And the substance just isn’t there.”
The 21-year-old southpaw looked sensational for the first seven rounds of his IBF title fight with Filip Hrgovic. Then, maybe taken aback by the Croatian’s resilience, and certainly unsure of how to pace his attacks, Itauma unraveled and was exhausted by the time he was stopped in the ninth round.
Warren guided Amir Khan and Daniel Dubois to world title glory after shattering defeats early in their careers. He knows which qualities a boxer must have if they are to successfully rebuild and he is certain that Itauma has what it takes.
Whittaker may not have lost, but Warren believes that the difficulties he has encountered at a much lower level leave real question marks over his ability to reach the top.
“We’ve got something to do with Moses and Moses has got something to do to come back after his loss, but I know he can do it,” Warren said. “He showed what he was all about. He showed he had plenty of heart. He had a good chin. He just ran out of gas and that was because he didn’t manage the fight. Everything was 100 miles an hour. Looking at [Whittaker], he’s got a long, long way to go.”
