Jai Opetaia made it perfectly clear that he has a singular focus this week.
The unbeaten Ring and IBF cruiserweight champion is completely committed to tearing through Brandon Glanton in his Zuffa Boxing debut Sunday night in Las Vegas. The Australian southpaw isn’t interested in the common promotional practice of discussing future fights before he handles his upcoming opponent.
When pressed, however, Opetaia agreed that it is realistic to expect him to fight David Benavidez if Benavidez beats WBA/WBO champ Gilberto Ramirez in his cruiserweight debut May 2 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
“I believe it is, especially him being [at] cruiserweight,” Opetaia told Max Kellerman, Mike Coppinger, LeSean McCoy and Chris Arreola during the most recent episode of “Inside The Ring,” which premiered Monday on DAZN. “You know, to me, it just makes sense. Like, if he’s fighting for a world title in my division, why wouldn’t they want other world champions [fight him]? Why don’t they want to see who’s the best in the division?
“It does not make sense to me if we don’t fight. He's coming up fighting for undisputed, a unification fight, and he’s gonna be holding the WBO and WBA [titles]. It just doesn’t make sense to me that we wouldn’t fight. All I gotta do is keep winning and keep doing my job.”
Benavidez, 29, is not part of Zuffa Boxing’s roster, though that is not viewed as a potential obstacle in negotiations for a title unification fight against Opetaia. He knocked out Anthony Yarde in the main event of “The Ring IV: Night of the Champions” card November 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and has a good working relationship with Turki Alalshikh, who owns The Ring and is part of the leadership group behind Zuffa Boxing.
DraftKings lists Opetaia (29-0, 23 KOs) as an 20-1 favorite to beat Atlanta’s Glanton (21-3, 18 KOs), The Ring’s 10th-ranked cruiserweight, in a 12-round main event Paramount+ will stream from UFC’s Meta Apex performance complex. Main undercard coverage is scheduled to begin on Paramount+ at 9 p.m. ET (6 p.m. PT).
Benavidez (31-0, 25 KOs) is a 3-1 favorite over Mexico’s Ramirez (48-1, 30 KOs), according to DraftKings. Phoenix’s Benavidez is ranked eighth on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list, second among The Ring’s light heavyweight contenders for Dmitry Bivol’s belt and can become champion in a third division by beating Ramirez. Opetaia is still more focused on taking the titles he believes Benavidez will win from Ramirez than what boxing Benavidez could do to expand his profile.
“When they see me, they see Jai Opetaia, one of the best boxers in the world,” Opetaia said. “I’m not here to chase fame or someone else or chase names for clout. I’m chasing undisputed. Even Benavidez, his name’s only in the mix because he’s fighting for a cruiserweight title. So, if it wasn’t fighting for a cruiserweight title, it doesn’t bother me. I don’t chase names. I’m chasing legacy and undisputed, you know? Look at the last couple undisputed fighters. They’re the f------ GOATs of this sport. And I want my name up there, and I want my last name up there.”
