Damian Knyba will take a huge step up in class when he challenges Agit Kabayel for his WBC interim heavyweight title January 10.
Initially, Agit Kabayel was given just a date and site for his next fight.
Now the undefeated heavyweight contender has an opponent.
The Ring has confirmed a report Monday by BILD, a German newspaper, that Kabayel’s homecoming bout will come against Damian Knyba on January 10 at Rudolf Weber Arena in Oberhausen, Germany. DAZN will stream Kabayel-Knyba worldwide.
The 6-foot-8 Knyba (17-0, 11 KOs), a native of Poland who resides and trains in northern New Jersey, will take a huge step up in competition when he battles Kabayel (26-0, 18 KOs). The 33-year-old Kabayel owns the WBC interim heavyweight title and is ranked third among The Ring’s contenders for undisputed champ Oleksandr Usyk.
He grabbed his most recent win when he knocked out Joey Dawejko (28-14-4, 16 KOs) on October 18 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Although he was on his way to a lopsided points victory, Knyba took the judges out of the equation by stopping Dawejko in the penultimate round.
Kabayel has fought like a man possessed over the last few years.
The native German nabbed notable knockout wins against Arslanbek Makhmudov, Frank Sanchez and Zhilei Zhang. He stopped the previously undefeated Makhmudov and Zhang with body shots.
Knyba is trained by retired light heavyweight Shaun George, who is also Zhang’s chief second.
