If Alycia Baumgardner were to have her way, she’d be standing across from one of women’s boxing’s biggest stars the next time she steps into the ring.
After coasting to a unanimous decision win over Bo Mi Re Shin to retain her Ring, IBF, WBA and WBO 130-pound titles at Infosys Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York, on ESPN, Baumgardner called for a fight against Katie Taylor or Amanda Serrano. Between the two, Taylor is the fight she’d prefer as opposed to facing her promotional stablemate.
“When we talk about Katie Taylor, we talk about someone who is just as skilled,” Baumgardner said at the post-fight press conference. “I believe in my abilities, and I'm sure she believes in hers. When we talk about high-level boxing, when it comes to women, she's the perfect person to be in the ring with, so you can see the separation and see the high-level skill of boxing.”
Baumgardner (18-1, 7 KOs) added that she’s had conversations with Taylor (25-1, 6 KOs), The Ring’s No. 1-ranked women’s fighter pound-for-pound, about a potential fight where she shared her thoughts on sharing the ring with the unified Ring, IBF, WBA and WBO 140-pound champion.
“It was a respectful conversation,” Baumgardner said. “I respect Katie. I understand that she's put some skin in the game. I'm all for seeing how we can make a fight happen and seeing what it goes from there.”
Taylor, 39, of Bray, Ireland, will supposedly fight one more time before she retires. Her promoter, Matchroom Boxing chairman Eddie Hearn, is hoping to make her farewell bout at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland, which holds up to 82,000 fans.
If a Taylor fight can’t be made, Baumgardner would set her sights on Serrano (48-4, 31 KOs), who is the unified Ring, WBA and WBO featherweight champion. The Puerto Rican is The Ring’s No. 6-ranked fighter, pound for pound.
She added that she’d be willing to return to New York, which is where Serrano, 37, has fought many of the biggest fights of her career.
“If we can't get the Katie fight, I think the Amanda fight makes the most sense,” Baumgardner said. “Being here in New York City, it's my second home now. We might as well get it on and popping at [Madison Square Garden] with Amanda. It's an opportunity for the fans of boxing. When we talk about women's sports, we talk about setting the bar, it's with Amanda.”
