Baumgardner on facing Dubois: I'm 'not a charity fighter'

No two female boxers have been mentioned in the same sentence more of late than Alycia Baumgardner and Caroline Dubois.
While Dubois has remained steadfast that she wants the fight, Baumgardner has maintained that the unified Ring, WBC and WBO lightweight champion doesn’t deserve it at the moment. Baumgardner’s tune didn’t change after she beat Bo Mi Re Shin by unanimous decision to retain her Ring, IBF, WBA and WBO 130-pound titles Friday in New York.
And she added that being asked about facing Dubois has begun to annoy her.
“When we talk about Alycia Bumgarner, her career and her trajectory on where she is going, we have to align her with the biggest fights,” she said at her post-fight press conference. “I'm at a stage where I'm at the biggest fights. Dubois is a great fighter, yes, but she's nowhere near where I am.
“Take a seat. Put some skin in the game, like I've been saying. This game is a respect thing. You don't get a fight by calling somebody else out. You’ve got to put the work in, and I'm with the biggest fights. I am a prize fighter, not a charity fighter.”
Baumgardner’s one-sided win over Shin gave her and Dubois (13-0-1, 5 KOs) a second common opponent: Dubois, 25, defeated Shin by majority decision in March of last year and Terri Harper by unanimous decision in their unification bout on April 5 to win the Ring and WBO titles.
Baumgardner (18-1, 7 KOs), 31, stopped Harper in the fourth round to win the WBC 130-pound title in 2021.
“When you talk about Dubois and Alycia Baumgardner, [we’re] two different people,“ Baumgardner said. “I separated that. Majority decision [vs. Shin] when it came to Dubois. In three-minute [rounds], unanimous when it came to Alycia Baumgardner. So when we talk about common opponents, I'm different.”
Baumgardner vs. Dubois is one of the biggest fights that can be made in women’s boxing. The bad blood and their heated interaction during the pre-fight press conference for Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul in December would only add to the potential bout.
For now, Baumgardner has her sights set on either unified 140-pound champion Katie Taylor or unified featherweight titleholder Amanda Serrano. Taylor (25-1, 6 KOs) is The Ring’s No. 1-ranked women’s fighter pound for pound, while Serrano (48-4, 31 KOs) is No. 7.
Baumgardner prefers to face Taylor over her promotional stablemate Serrano.
“When we talk about Katie Taylor, we talk about someone who is just as skilled,” Baumgardner said at the post-fight press conference on Friday. “I believe in my abilities, and I'm sure she believes in hers. When we talk about high-level boxing, when it comes to women, she's the perfect person to be in the ring with, so you can see the separation and see the high-level skill of boxing.”
